I thought we could do with a film equivalent of the book thread, where we mention what we've watched recently and give some impressions.

I'll kick it off with 2 offerings.

1st up is Super. Man, this is a fucked-up film. You thought Kick-Ass was the only 'real bloke with no powers takes on crime as a costumed vigilante' film? Wrong! This one doesn't romanticise the notion - quite the reverse. Equal parts disturbing, squirm inducing and bizarre.

"Shut up, crime!"

The second is a little known Brit-flick called Attack the Block. Inner-city hoodies take on aliens in a tower block. A decent film by first-time Director Joe Cornish. Although the social commentary that is shoe-horned in is pretty ham-fisted and obvious. Still recommended, though.

I liked Super. I will agree that it's really messed up, and definitely not for kids. I think Kevin Bacon was the only normal person in the whole movie, and he did a fantastic job as the bad guy.

Captain America was also really, really good. The character was well-defined, and the movie was not cheesy, which surprised me.

Thor was really good, as well, though I don't think Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman had any chemistry at all. It felt like Natalie just mailed this in.

I really liked Sucker Punch. It's obviously gorgeous and all, but I also liked the story and the way the different worlds or dreams or realities fit into one another. I'd love to run a game like that.

Black Death was alright. I liked the ambiance, especially at the beginning and during the trip that follows. The village spared by the Plague is "meh", and the end of the movie could have been much, much better IMO.

I Saw The Devil, from the sometimes reliable Jee-woon Kim, was pretty great. It's a serial killer flick with OldBoy's, Min-Sik Choi playing the baddy. It's  got all that blurring the line between good and evil but it's great watching the protaganist slowly discover he's way out of his league when it comes to understanding the nature of evil

I will second Sucker Punch. I know the whole world hated it, but I thought it was fun. Like a bizarre game of Rifts meets Slaughterhouse Five.

Hesher- Joseph Gordon-Levitt as an anarchistic metal head that imposes himself into a disfunctional family. Also with Rainn Wilson and that Portman chick. Dark humour and alot awkward. Oh, and lots of old school Metallica.

Stake Land- One of the better vampire movies of the last several years. In the Walking Dead vein (hyuck, hyuck). Keep an eye open for Kelly McGillis (yeah, the one from Top Gun). Some actors you'll recognize, but no big names.

I thought Black Death was a real piece of shit. So was Season of the Witch, but Season was more entertaining.

The most fun I've had watching a genre movie recently would have to be Solomon Kane. Tough to find on DVD in the States but worth it, IMO.

The 2011 Conan reboot, on the other hand, was garbage front to back.

I was feeling tired and cranky last night. So did my SO. We ended up watching Dirty Harry, the original movie, together. "I know what you're thinking, punk: did he fire six shots, or only five? Well to tell you the truth I sort of lost count myself with all this excitement..." Good times.

I've mostly been watching lame movies on comedy central lately. Last thing I remember watching was called "The Slammin' Salmon"....it had its moments I suppose. Been kind of lazy about watching movies the past few months.

Pretty psyched for October though. Me and the Mrs will plow through the old Horror classics: Rosemary's Baby, Carrie, The Exorcist, Dracula, etc.

As Eastwood films go, I like Heartbreak Ridge way more than I probably should. It's kind of mediocre overall, but so incredibly quotable.

Yeah, Solomon Kane was indeed quite good. I found it on DVD recently.

I was also very pleasantly surprised by Rise of the Planet of the Apes, actually. This will help me get over Burton's rape of the original Planet of the Apes film.

Yeah, anything with Mario Van Peebles is inherently damaged, but I too have a soft spot for Heartbreak Ridge. Nowadays I look at it almost as a prelude to Gran Torino.

Vanishing on 7th Street - only reason I even knew about this one was because of a preview on the Black Death DVD. I really liked it a lot, a great 2-hour Twilight Zone episode essentially, very well done and a good source of ideas for a one-shot adventure.

Saw Despicable Me at the weekend. Decent family film, although i found myself giving wry smiles rather than laughter.

Somewhat puzzled by the Solomon Kane movie love. I tried to see it but I was too tired from work, and slept through it (story of my life, really :D). My wife, who also slept through it but watched half an hour more than I did, assures me that it was a half hour of crap. Between this and the nearly universal panning fo the movie by critics and blogosphere alike, I chose to pass. Maybe I'll give it a second chance...

I thought Despicable Me was okay, but for me, Megamind is the definitive "sympathetic supervillain" movie. I love everything about it; the characters, the dialogue, the art.
