I dunno'. Some directors have themes/subject matter they constantly revisit. I don't have a problem with that.

I hear ya. I'm a big fan of Tarantino, who's big (maybe a bit too big) on his themes.

It's my own damn fault, of course. I saw the previews, and the reviews, I saw the movie I wanted to see (indestructible artificial skin! human experiments! obsessed reseacher with tragic past!), only to be treated to, well, an Almodóvar movie.

Hell, this sounds way cooler than the actual movie.....which I have yet to see :(

Anyways, saw (again, with some mates this weekend) the movie which is the only legitimate contender to the GREATEST MOVIE EVER MADE mantle (that would be the original Conan the Barbarian) - Reign of Fire. I have no words to describe this film. In fact words would be a criminal act, for no words can describe the badassity of Matthew McConaughey's, Van Zan. Like Macbeth, Fire proposes that hero and villain can be one and the same and Christian Bale plays the most convincing girlfriend role, ever - nuanced, no patronizing whatsoever, a fully formed character.

Is this sarcasm?

I enjoy Reign of Fire, but rarely see it praised in gamer circles.

Not at all. It probably does not say much about my taste in cinema but I really dig this film. Amongst other things, it's so fucking quotable:

Creedy: Only one thing worse than a dragon... Americans.

Denton Van Zan: Look out that window, Eden isn't burning its burnt

Quinn Abercromby: You're standing on ground where I've buried hundreds. This my land. I'll ask the questions. What are YOU doing here?

And the moneyshot quote !

Denton Van Zan: Envy the country that has heroes, huh? I say pity the country that needs them

Fucking gamers, don't know a damn thing.

I've always liked Reign of Fire. I get a kick out of people who say Matt's death scene wasn't heroic. He knew he was dead, no matter what. So he just charged right at it. Post-apocalyptic viking!

Awesome movie, hilarious death scene. :D

Agree on Almodovar. I mean, nobody is asking Michael Bay to stop being Michael Bay (ok, they do ask him to stop making movies...)

Quote from: VectorSigma;489657Watched Centurion and Red Cliff today (both on Netflix streaming) and enjoyed them both immensely.

Which version of Red Cliff are you watching? The 2-parts original, or the shorter, edited US version?

Quote from: Werekoala;489697Yesterday it was X-Men; First Class (which I really liked, probably the best of the X-Men movies - I want more "Adventures of Charles and Erik" though!) and re-watched Big for the first time in a decade probably, if not longer. Forgot what a fun movie that is.

If you liked the actor playing Xavier, I suggest The Last King of Scotland.

Quote from: The Butcher;488166So, I watched the new Three Musketeers movie.

How does it compare to the Disney one? The one with Charlie Sheen, Tim Curry, Olivier Platt and (oh my) Rebecca De Mornay?

Saw that when it came out - loved it.

Excellent movie!

Wow, Rebecca De Mornay... there's a blast from the past. You made me Google her, and now that I know what she looks like today, I kind of wish I didn't. A cruel thing to say, I know, but true.

Jong, it almost certainly compares unfavorably with your preferred version of the story as it is openly non-traditional and style-over-substance. It's got airships and flamethrowers and clockwork devices and gatling cannons. At the risk of coming across as very, very snarky, it's pretty much the D&D 4e of Musketeer movies. :D

I was ready to hate it, but found it disarmingly entertaining. It's no classic, though.

The edited one; that's what's on Netflix.  Had I the option, I probably would've watched the full version.

I don't know which picture you have found, but I think she has aged pretty well.
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).

Yeah I had the same impression. I believe she has to be around 50 years old at this point.

The Disney one had Micheal Wincott as one of the baddies, always a pleasure to watch. Oh, and I watched Kiefer Sutherland in Melancholia and by golly, a good jolt for those who forget the man can actually act !

My 'Reign of Fire' movie is Deep Rising. I think it's an awesome film.

Saw Thor a bit back. Thought it was ok, but nothing more. Then again, i'm not a big fan.

This is what I had in mind, and in second thought, some other pics do look more flattering than that.

Either way, it's not Isabella Rossellini bad. But it's still a bit of a shock to see that stunning woman aged, even if gracefully.
