Title: Tech question from a travelling geek
Post by: Benoist on July 08, 2010, 04:35:46 PM
Alright. I'm going to travel from Canada to France in a few days, and I'll be taking my laptop with me. I have an adapter plug, and the actual computer adapter from Delta Electronics indicates an input of 100-240 Volts ~ 1.5 A, 40-60 Hrz LPS.

Here's my question. Given that the voltage in France is 220 Volts, I shouldn't have a problem plugging it, right? It's not going to fry my computer or anything?

Nah, you should be good.  The specs make it sound like it auto-switches for the voltage input, and any half-way decent adapter will have some kind of fuse that blows out before it will damage your computer.

My step-son, my wife and I brought our laptop computers to France last year. All of us used plug adapters but we didn't change anything about the AC adapters we usually use. My wife's computer didn't seem to suffer in any way. My stepson noticed at some point that his AC adapter was very hot. A few months later his machine turned off quite often even with the power chord plugged. It was like his battery and/or the AC adapter were shot. Both were replaced and the computer is doing fine now.  My computer already had a weak battery before that so I wouldn't know if it had any impact.

Not sure if it's useful info but here it is :)

What kind of laptop was your stepson using?

Ah. That's good to know. I wasn't aware of that. :)
