Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. Probably. Not a big fan myself, never realized it had such a following til the net came along.

Quote from: BedrockBrendan;985408Strange Tales From a Chinese Studio (the Penguin edition is available pretty cheap on Amazon). It has tons of short accounts of the strange. It is quite perfect for gaming inspiration because the stories get right into the monster details.

Got it added to my Amazon wishlist. Just picked up Penguin's 4 volume collection of the Arabian Nights so I gotta dig into that as well.

Quote from: ArrozConLeche;985672Would you include Highlander as Sword & Sorcery? Except for the modern setting, it's got some of the elements.

If we are including Highlander, I would add it to my list as well.

Those are some seriously bad movies. Never understood the cult following.

If you want good s&s, Willow all the way.

I liked the first one, but that was when I was young. I'd need to watch again.

The first one was enjoyable. It was what it was of course and a product of its time. I quite liked it. The second one was pretty terrible.

I loved Krull so much. Watched it recently and still loved it, but I do admit to the cheese.

What's everyone favorite non-80s fantasy flicks?

I loved The Scorpion King and it makes me sad The Rock hasn't done more faux-Conan.

I loved his Heracles. Damned fun movie, fairly well acted, and really plays with the mythos and concepts thereof.

Quote from: kosmos1214;985343While not TECHNICALLY A movie the Legend of Crystania is super solid another one is Rune explorers though it throws around A few more jokes and gags.

Crystania is a spinoff of Lodoss. Though it has far less BX D&D in it.

I rather liked Lou Ferrigno's first Hercules movie. It was so weird with the robots. But was well done. And the flame sword effect was neet.

Theres also a few Japanese fantasy movies Ive mentioned before like Legend of 8 Samurai. And the really oddball Yamato Takeru movie from 1994.

And if you can find it check out Birth of Japan from 1959 with Toshiro Mifune and follows the creation of Nippon and the adventures of the god Susanoo.

Odd that Europeans, outside of Boorman, have never really warmed to the genre in film. And of course their approach is much more arty and often uncompromising than what we're use to from commercial US film.

There is some science fantasy like the Polish Hard to be God and On the Silver Globe and the wonderful fairy tale-like Czech film Valerie and Her Week of Wonders.

The French have some very unusual takes on their tradition of the Romance, like Bresson's brutal Lancelot du Lac with an unforgettable approach to medieval warfare and Rhomer's atypical Perceval.

Does Werner Herzog's amazing Even Dwarves Started Small count as fantasy? Or Heart of Glass? The first could be read as sf or fantasy. Heart of Glass is a very strange film (the entire cast acted under hypnosis!). It's about an 18th century Bavarian village where the loss of the magic glassworks they manufactured drives the townspeople slowly insane until a young mystic appears with a vision to save them. Very German.

I'm not sure if you would consider this S&S, but how about the Thief of Baghdad (both versions)?
Don\'t part with your illusions. When they are gone you may still exist, but you have ceased to live.

Certainly are. Moreso the Sinbad movies. D&D draws on those tales for some elements. The Roc and other creatures come to mind. And wasnt the dancing sword from one of those tales?

There are. But alot of it came out of Italy and Spain. Theres also a few from Russia. Wolfhound was a recent one. I've only seen parts of it. Illya Muromets was an old one I found interesting. They did a nice animated version of it sometime around 2000.

Love those films. TCM shows them often on weekend mornings.
