This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Lend me your book suggestions

I recovering from surgery and plan on doing some pleasure reading while I recover. Probably going to have my wife pick up some books at Barnes and Noble today. Anyone have some good suggestions for fantasy books? (I haven't read fantasy in a few years so I am a little out of the loop). Looking for something that different; preferably something easy to abdorb.

Sadly fantasy has been overrun by the urban fantasy+sex trope. Not always a good thing. There are a few.
If you read and enjoyed the Deed of Paksenarrion, by Elizabeth Moon she's returned to that world with a book "Oath of Fealty"
It takes place after Deed, and continues threads from that story, but focuses on different character view points.  It was enjoyable, but not as great as Deed, to me. A sequel to it was out or is due out soon.

I haven't read Moon. Maybe I will check out Deed first.

Personally, I really liked the Noble Dead series...it plays with the HawtSexayVampire stuff in a fantasy setting, but tends to remember that vampires are still horrible monsters.

How'd that end up?

The main protagonist is a dhampir, so she gets a "free pass" with the quasivampire stuff without being a Complete Monster...there was one other vampire who wound up in antihero territory by the end of the first series (six books, the second series is underway, and I haven't read any of those yet)...at least in the first series, the antihero vamp never came to dominate the story, though, like you would expect from such a situation (and how well the conversion to antihero territory worked is surely a matter of opinion).

I need to start the second series soon, if only because I was completely surprised at how well the first series worked, in my opinion.

Deed of Paksenarrion, is very much: What would a good author do with a D&D like setting, and a paladin. Well worth reading.
