Title: Steven Seagal: Law Man
Post by: Bedrockbrendan on December 31, 2009, 03:17:00 PM
Okay, so I saw this show for the first time the other night. I know it is a little off topic from RPGs (though I believe a reality show like this would be a great premise for a modern campaign). Still I just need to get some other peoples' feedback on the show.

Personally I found it very entertaining. I confess I was a big Steven Seagal fan growing up, and I think it is hilarious he is doing a copy reality show. However, at the beginning of the show Seagal claims to have been a cop for the last 20 years while he was also making movies (and he talks about it like it was his second job).

Somehow, I find this a little difficult to believe. It seems people would have caught on, and it would have been in the papers if that were the case. Or there would have been at least a single incident involving seagal that made the papers (all it would take is one accusation of police brutality involving him). Perhaps this was an honorary position, or he funcitoned as an advisor in some way. Does anyone have the real story here.

The show bills him as a Deputy Chief for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's department.  That means that you'll have to dig around New Orleans for the answers, since that's where he's operating out of for this show.  The other place to dig is Discovery Networks (which A&E is part of) and his production company.  Between the three, you should quickly find useful leads that can confirm or deny the claims made.

He really has been a Deputy Sheriff, I guess it was just part time when he was still doing movies or he got a sabbatical or something.  He apparently never made a big deal about it before, or maybe they asked him not to, but now that his Hollywood career is in a slump he is letting them follow him around on duty.

So this is real but from what little I've seen of it, he is playing to the camera a lot, probably to the amusement of some of the other officers.

Having seen a goodly amount of his direct-to-video output of recent years, I am not surprised to see him resort to this.  That said, he's doing it right and I have no problem with the show because of that fact.

I agree, I think it is great entertainment, unlike some of his recent movies and it doesn't seem to be exploitive so he does seem to be doing it right.  I just can't believe there is that much crime down there for them to film so I'm not sure how much mileage they can get out of it.

I'm really surprised that Seagal never mentioned this during his movie career.  He always struck me as a bit egotistical but I give him credit for not using his job to enhance his resume for playing a cop in movies.
