Title: Space:1999
Post by: jeff37923 on May 17, 2010, 12:24:21 AM
I know that the Space:1999 TV series is older than dirt, but I love it. Especially the Eagles, Hawks, probe ships, and Moonbase Alpha.

Does anyone else remember this one?

Does anyone know who currently owns the rights to this TV series?

Do you want a medal for knowing how to use a search engine?

Do you want a pat on the head because you know how to use a search engine Koltar, just like everyone else on the Internet?

I LOVED Space:1999 when I was a kid. I still love the gear and uniforms and such (mostly from memory - been awhile since I've seen it). Even looking back after all this time, I think the tech holds up amazing well - certainly the most "realistic" looking ships and gear that I can recall. And I'm pissed that we don't have a moonbase NOW, much less back in 1999.

Also - actually noticed when the date for the moon being flung out of oribt came around in Real Life (tm).

Geek.

Actually, I think I have the series on DVD in a box somewhere, now that you mention it...

I don't know much about the "Starblazers Adventures" game, but it sounds like S:1999 would be a perfect setting for it.

I've never seen it--except in brief passing. (One small part of an episode.)

I'd like to at some point because it sounds like an interesting show.

I don't know who owns the rights now, but I do remember the series, very, very well. My mom was a fan, and it's one of those shows (along with Mission Impossible, later Magnum PI, A Team etc) that were very popular in France at some point, in the late 70s/early 1980s.

Two thumbs up. I'd love to see it again!

Great show, it was on a retro channel in the UK recently and I watched several.

Really went downhill in the second season though when they introduced the shapechanging girl.  Still some good episodes, but overall they lost a lot of the magic somehow.

My best toy as a kid was an Eagle transporter with detachable cargo module.  I hit myself in the knee with it and ended up with a tiny dark speck there where some metal came off that persisted IIRC into my 20s.

Happy days.

Space 1999 was an excellent low budget/high production value British TV version of Star Trek.

Had all the models as a kid.

Think this would make a good setting for Mongoose Traveller?

I've always thought that the eagels were some extremely realistic spacecraft until they began operating in atmosphere.

For purely vacuum only duty vessels they were extremely plausible looking designs. I could see one IRL launching from an orbital facility, reaching the moon, landing VTOL and taking off to return to earth orbit with no issues, asides from the AG onboard.
