Title: So sad, yet So Happy , Store has died (ended) .....LONG LIVE the Store!!!
Post by: Koltar on January 02, 2008, 10:03:10 PM
Its Sad...and yet triuphant at the same time.

The Game Store that I 've worked at for the past 4 years and and 2 months closed today ..."permanently".  I did final paperwork and closed it out with one of the store's ownbers and my district owner there while they were literally tearing  the down around me.

They were boxing up games and miniatures....and trading card games....for.......

Well for the "BIG MOVE DOWN the HALL"....

Thats the triumphant /HAPPY!!! HAPPY part . You see we did so well as a strore the past year and half that our owners and management decided to enlarge and expand us - into a new location  in a storefront down the mall's hallway.

We STILL will sell all the RPGs and gamer stuff we sold before - but we'll have a larger inventory , tables to actually game at , drinks for sale, swords to sell, T-shirts, comic books, graphic novels...and other Sci-Fi and fantasy stuff and collectables.

So..its the closing of one store - a gaming only one....but the opening of a brand new store with more variety that includes gaming stuff - with the crew of employees who used to staff the old place.

Does feel weird - I'm the last "survivor" of the original store's original staff. Made my way up to somewhere between Assistant Manager and fuill manager.

Your new incarnation should do even better than the old one.  The best damned store in my area--The Source Comics & Games--is like your new incarnation and it's doing great.

Yeah, but the question that everyone is dying to know is will the new location make it easier for you to score with the ladies? :what:

There are a LOT of women gamers locally.
Percentage-wise. ...more than in other cities. (so I've heard)

One of our regular customers - she loves to play Warhammer 40k and Shadowrun ....and she's a manager at the FREDERICKS of HOLLWOOD satore in the mall.
Unfortunately - she's already involved with someone.

Ah, you got me. Thought you had been canned and one more bastion of great gaming had fallen by the wayside...... Jerk :p
Congrats on the new store. May you have many happy times ahead.

Your area is lucky. Our Mind Games here in Melbourne, every time I go there they have a narrower range of rpgs than before. I suspect they're gradually phasing them out - I've seen it happen before. Minotaur Books used to be rpgs, then they added videos and comics, the rpgs got moved downstairs and the range got narrower and narrower, nowadays Minotaur just does dvds, comics, and media merchandising stuff.

That'll leave us with only MilSims. One real game store for a city of 3.8 million people.

It's not lack of custom or sales. Basically they just can't be bothered with rpgs when other stuff is easier to sell and has a higher profit margin per unit.

Kyle Aaron....,

Start your own store.
Best solution I can think of.

Why? I can still get rpgs online, and play in groups. It's a loss to the gaming community as a whole, not to me personally. And I already do my bit for the gaming community with the GameCircle.org and Geektogether stuff.

Oh, no, no, no.  Not necessarily at least.  Far too many people go into business with little more than good intentions and precious little business sense.

The real moral of the story you're telling, Ed, is that your store's owners and managers have not only a good business plan, but have a head for accommodating shifting trends well while still promoting the hobby.  That's no mean feat.  Please extend my regards to them.

WTF!!!!  I ran a stinkin Shadowrun game in this town for two years and it didn't have one Fredericks of Hollywood chick in it!  Sonuva.....

Congrats on the move Ed.  Glad to hear you are doing well.  I've seen a couple of FLGS around here bite the dust lately and I was getting worried there wouldn't be any left.

True Ian but they usually hire hotties too.  To paraphrase Scott Adams: If you measure your panty size in hectares you shouldn't work in a lingerie store.

She may not be a model - but she is damn cute. Think of a good blend of the appearances of Bailey Quarters and Jennifer from "WKRP in CincInnati"

Grimjack - if you ever stop by the store when she is there  - I'll introduce you to her.
