It would be good if the script is an adaptation of an existing novel, as the quality of a straight-to-movie script is usually dubious. I've not read that novel, so I don't know if it is any good though. My preference would be a Forgotten Realms setting, as I think Dragonlance is a bit different to classic D&D, with Kender and so on. Not a biggie though - the general hope is just for a fun movie, like Guardians of the Galaxy.

That may be the weakest of the early DL novels but often a mediocre novel makes for a good film.

The director isn't untalented but the co-screenwriters work is a bit mixed, Wrath of the Titans was terrible but The Orphan was a pretty good slow burn horror film.

I like Vin Diesel but outside of F&F as a lead he is restricted to B-films these days, so if he did get the lead that would suggest a more modest budget and plan for the film in general.

Vin Desiel would be a flop.  Gaurdians tone would be a flop, just another example of hollywood chasing the new hotness.  Gaurdians tone in Autum Twilight is going to be a terrible fit.

Mercifully this will likely die long before anyone gets too far. These announcements are all too common. Some arent even real.

Dragonlance as a comedy... um... no. Sure there were humorous moments in the series. But 75% of that humour involved the one sore point of the series. The kender.

I have zero interest in any D&D branded movie, and even less in the Dragonlance subset. I kinda wish they'd stop this desperate desire to make a D&D movie that people take seriously. It gives RPGs a bad name. At least Mazes & Monsters made RPGs look kind of dangerous and bad ass. :D

D&D as a game doesn't make enough money to sustain itself in the long term. Its doing OK now - largely thanks to a well received new edition and cutting back on the saturation levels of supplements and OGL support from previous editions. However, its still small fry compared to other parts of the gaming hobby industry. It is entirely possible for some exec in the future to can the game if sales figures drop.

A single, big, well received movie would actually sell the brand of D&D in such a way that will effectively bank-roll and protect it for generations to come, whilst also promoting the game itself to new audiences. Regardless of whether you like it or not.

You mean like how the Marvel movies have brought comic book sales back into the millions? How many times do you guys need to be proven wrong about this stuff?
