SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

While virii are largely nonexistant due to practical reasons stemming from better security implementation, I know for a fact that there's still spyware present on OS X, because I've personally had to remove it from my own machine.  And there are still a few trojans out there now and again.

So don't get any funny ideas that having a Mac makes you totally bulletproof.  There's always crooked fuckers out there.

The reason Mac has so little is that no one USES Mac ;) There's no point in breaking computers that aren't selling :p

Out of curiosity, I downloaded and ran a MacScan since it has a free 30 day evaluation.  It wound up finding 36 ad tracking cookies but nothing else.  I'm careful about what I'm installing before I'm willing to type my admin password, so that doesn't surprise me.

No computer is totally bulletproof but I've generally found a lot more troubling stuff on a computer when I run scan like that when the computer as a PC than when it's a Mac, even when the PC is running security software and the Mac isn't.

Actually, Apple is currently the number #3 computer maker on the market, and their market share has been growing largely unabated for a number of years now.

I wasn't aware there even was any anti-spyware software out there, as so far as I've seen it seems few folks are aware it's even out there.  In my case, it was actually losing my internet for a couple weeks that let me spot some "free" software that was dialing home (Solitaire XL, BTW.  Stay away from it.)  I also ran into some suspicions regarding Weatherbug, as the PC version is well known as spyware.

It's absolutely true that the Mac OS is leap years ahead of Windows in the security department, largely due to the UNIX core of the OS, but with the market share growing all the time, more and more people are finding ways, and Apple is abysmally slow when it comes to releasing OS updates.

If they continue growing as they have, they're going to have to step up.  That big Safari vulnerability that hit recently took them months to fix.

I was teasing :) Akin to when my other half calls open office CommieWare.

Sadly, sarcasm doesn't travel well.

If you want it really, really secure, you can get a flash drive and install PortableApps, which comes with ClamWin antivirus.  The whole suite of programs is less than a gig, so if you want a bit of storage space, a 2gb drive is cheap.  It also has the entire Open Office package, GIMP portable, Firefox portable, a dozen and a half other programs, and you can install more from the site as you need them.  If you don't want or need what is included, you just delete the folder and do a re-scan on the PortableApps menu program.  Easy peasy.

I think I already know the response to my other suggestion:
