Oh. My. Gawd. That sucks in so many levels I can't begin to describe it.

I'm going to the premiere, though.

On one hand, I think it looks pretty good because Guy Ritchie is behind it. On the other hand, it looks like Conan Doyle might turn over in his grave.

Hunh.  Looks like Young Sherlock Holmes...All Grown Up!  I was wondering when they'd get around to making a sequel to that movie.

I was hoping Bryan Singer & Christopher McQuarrie would have taken a stab at Holmes.

Edit: Ben Chaplin as Holmes, Ian Hart as Dr.Watson and I may be waaay wrong in this : Clive Owen as Moriarty....

If you read up on the angle that Ritiche and Downey Jr. on taking on this, it sounds like they are pretty faithful to the spirit of the books:

QuoteFrom that wikipedia article : A lot of the action that Conan Doyle refers to was actually made manifest in our film. Very often, Sherlock Holmes will say things like, 'If I hadn't been such an expert short stick person, I would have died in that' or he would refer to a fight off screen. We're putting those fights on screen.

Also, it sounds like Jude Law is going for the idea that Watson was definitely the equal of Holmes and not just his "sidekick".

Yeah, that was used in a Doctor Who novel in the '90s, I think. Sucky novel. Watson was a fairly good shot and a good MD, but mainly he was an exposition tool. Yeah, Guy Ritchie's movies are great, and I wasn't referring to the fights or whatever, I was thinking about how Downey jr. seems to be going for the "witty rogue" which, IMO, doesn't really fit Holmes.

It looks cool, but the casting looks off to me. I agree with Sunboy about Downey trying to play the witty rouge. Perhaps I am just to used to the type of Holmes portrayed by Basil Rathbone from the 40's.

Jeremy Brett's Holmes remains the standard by which all others should be measured, and whilst I generally admire Downey Jnr. this looks like it doesn't even come close.

I agree. He was the definitive Holmes.
