This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I hardly go to RPGnet anymore since they ditched the search function. Looks like the mods feel keeping hundreds of threads about which Battlestar Galactica character a bunch of geeks want to bone most is more important than maintaining a tool for searching archived gaming content. Which is fucking ridiculous.

"Darren McClellan", isn't that the renamed "Hindenburg II"?  Has anyone figured out if he needs to refuel, or if he just self-generates the gaseous effluvium that keeps him aloft?

I've always figured he self-generates it, considering how much of it he spews in the hopes that his online antics will be considered "a life" by whatever deity(ies) he is associated.

They're bullshitting, though - the number of replies to a thread has no particular effect. 10 threads of 100 posts actually take up slightly more space than 1 thread of 1,000 posts, just as if you create 10 different text files with the same text on your computer, it takes up more space than the same text 10 times in one file. That doesn't have much effect, though, it's only a fraction of a percent difference in the data size.
Actually I have dealings with another vBulletin based forum where extra-long threads have caused problems - the word game threads spring to mind - thousands of one or two word posts.

It's not about disk space, it's about computational inefficiency in vBulletin that manifests itself when threads exceed a certain number of posts and, worse, when there are multiple threads of this length.

Quote
What slows things down is when it has to look lots of things up. Remote-linking heaps of images does that.

Remote linking images pushes the computation onto the client side. It makes things easier for vBulletin -- all it does is ship a short string of text and your browser decides whether or not to go get the data from the external source.

Quote
A search function also does that, which is why they removed it at rpg.net. If you're just looking at one thread, however long it is, it's not very demanding on the software.

Sadly, the search function in vBulletin does not look in just one thread. vBulletin is also mired in mySQL, which has all kinds of inefficiencies when dealing with multiple indices and large volumes of data, grinding to a halt on textual searches through fields with substantial data volume (bulletin boards store an abnormally large amount of data in a single field and searching within a field is not typically a priority for databases).

Quote
The number of threads and posts they have overall clutters things, because it's all stored on their server. This is why lots of forums cull old threads. But if you keep everything, well... it's just like if you keep every newspaper you ever read, pretty soon it's going to take you a long time just to find today's paper.

This is absolutely true. They should cap threads at a thousand posts and expire them after a year for on-topic sub boards and after about six days for off-topic sub boards. Tangency is the most useless and enormous tail possible to have to drag around for an RPG board.

"But it's a community!"

None of them are here to say, so I had to :)

By "space" I meant computational "space", ie processor power rather than drive space. Sorry, I was unclear.

I've got a blog. Do you read other people's blogs? I dunno. You can say hi if you want, though, I don't mind company. It's not all gaming, though; you run the risk of running into my RL shit.

No, Exalted isn't "crap" - it just doesn't sell any more  - at least not locally.

Also, it bores me  - but I'm fairly sure somebody somewhere likes it or else it wouldn't generate all those threads on other forums.

I also start to get annoyed with or resent games that stop selling.

So even tho I don't play D&D that much or at all - I look favorably on that game because it actually sells and customers tend to like it.  I've also bought enough 3.0/3.5 D20 Dungeons & Dragons books over the past 4 years that I can at least stay in a conversation about it and not really get lost in the terminology.

I know, and I shouldn't put words in your mouth, but it's just friendly ribbing. It's mostly just 'cause you're a little predictable.

I'm sorry your stock isn't moving, by the way. We've got group here that bought up a lot of the 1st Ed. stuff, which didn't account for all the sales, but we moved a fair chunk of books across a wide spectrum of the line. Haven't moved into 2nd Ed. though, yet.

I've never played Exalted, but I'd like to one day. It sounds interesting.

I actually quite liked the setting as it initially appeared in the 1st edition.  It quickly vaulted right over the top in subsequent supplements, though, and I never liked the mechanics.

I think the mechanics are a tad slow, but when you choose which to use and don't do silly things like sidereal/solar/lunar/dragonblooded crossovers, then it is good.
The setting is good in my book, but sometimes it feels like a little too much of everything, so that is actually toned down easily in game.
