This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Basic Science Behind Transhuman Brain Interface
« on: May 17, 2021, 04:16:56 AM »
OK, I ran across this video from Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell called "Can You Upload Your Mind & Live Forever?" and I'm posting a link of it here because it appears to have been sponsored/inspired by Cyberpunk 2077. Plus it is pretty good at touching on the basics of how difficult this could be, if it is at all possible.

"Meh."

Im not a super big fan of Kurzgesagt. I don't know exactly how to put it, but there is something .....presumptuous about them?

Anyway watched the video. They tended to downplay all the ways it could go wrong even if possible.

For the ultimate in going wrong consider the following scenario; the Catholics are right and Hell is everything you wanted more than God in the worst possible way.

You do the brain map and end up with a perfect copy that thinks it’s you, but you actually do have an immortal soul and your very last act was to suicide yourself in an effort to effectively defy God. Thus, you chose go to Hell and your personal Hell will be to watch silently and helplessly as the copy of you takes over your mortal life and as time passes and it begins to change it starts making decisions you never would have... and you have to watch and experience it all... for eternity.

I’ll stick with my original meatsuit and trust in God because, even if I’m wrong, I’ll never know it and so won’t care.

Thats a very self-serving worldview to assume that everybody that differs on god, or even the version of a monothiestic god, or even the exact details or worship for the traditionally abrahamic version of god wants hell and is a bad person.
Even from a angle of converting others from the perspective of saving them from hell, this is catholic virtue signaling, not a honest attempt to help people.

And Im a person vehemently against copying people, (most) transhumanism, and is pro-religeon.

It's a high tech version of the Ship of Theseus thought experiment.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ship_of_Theseus

What is Mind? Is it just the product of neurons in our brain? In which case, go nuts, man. Make an automated factory, scan your brain, and have that sucker crank out a neverending series of robotic "Yous". Then you croak and all those robot "Yous" go on doing not-quite-human things inspired by your original mind state. "You" still die and your stream of consiousness ends.

A better plan (IMO) would be to address the biological limits of the human body, and have some kind of implant or treatment that takes control of your senecence-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senescence

Then you can live until the heat death of the universe and then die from lack of resources. Or you slip in the bathtub and crack your head. Well, you could "improve" your body, with more implants and skeletal reinforcements and then are you still "You"? or some bizarre cyborg version of you? We're back to the Ship of Theseus.

The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.
