This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hey--
Here's a banner you can tack on to any game sessions where you will feature healthy snacks:

QuoteIf three people do it, they'll think it's a movement!
Employment Counselor: So what do you like to do outside of work?
Oblivious Gamer: I like to play games: wargames, role-playing games.
EC: My cousin killed himself because of role-playing games.
OG: Jesus, what was he playing? Rifts?

That's actually kind fo cool Stu. (In a geek sort of way, right? :) )

Oh, well, if you're going to get all picky, yeah.  Eat less, eat better, exercise more.

And, Stu, that really is a cool banner.  I like how the +1d10 HP makes the benefit explicit in a currency gamers will understand.  I think I'd prefer that it read "Promoting healthy lifestyles for gamers" or "Promoting healthy habits for gamers" or some less catchy horseshit like that.

Not quite what you asked for, but I would suggest that exercise is the key.  You need to kickstart your metabolism, then the cravings for unhealthy food will greatly diminish and your overall levels of well-being will skyrocket. Not just a few minutes here and there, but a commitment to a lifestyle of movement. Tai chi is a great way to start if you have restricted mobility, but look for something that will make you sweat and get the heart pumping that is practical for your current mobility level.
You can shake your fists at the sky. You can do a rain dance. You can ignore the clouds completely. But none of them move the clouds.

Never buy pre-made meals, not from the mall or the supermarket. Get yourself fresh fruit and vegetables, and grainy stuff like rice and pasta - bread should be mixed grain rather than white or even wholemeal.

Search around online or in bookstores and find yourself some recipes. Find about six different meals you like to eat and teach yourself to cook them. If you don't enjoy cooking, then cook up a big batch one day a week, pack it up in containers and go through it during the week.

Have one day a week where you eat whatever you want, it's a lot easier to diet if you know that (say) on gaming day Tuesday you can chug away whatever you like.

For exercise, normally walking is recommended, but for a guy who gets around with a cane that may be difficult. Have you a swimming pool nearby? That's good exercise and doesn't put any stress on your joints.

For snacks around the game table, dried fruits (dates, apricots, plums, figs, what have you) are better than the usual fare. But just regular raw fruit is the best. Have a banana or an apple instead of the Cheetos. Also, 100% fruit juice instead of soft drinks; soft drinks are bad, bad, bad.

That's good advice.

Cottage cheese is a good snack food. It's healthy both ways: it's not bad for you AND it has nutrients. It's neatest claim to fame is that it has all of the amino acids and has them the right quantities -- your body can just apply them directly to building muscle instead of breaking them apart and reconstituting them in the right quantities.

Protein shakes are fast and easy. If you have them for breakfast, it will help get your metabolism up. You'll burn more callories even without doing anything.

String Cheese can be a healthy snack.

Sugar can help satiate your appitite so a small serving of sweets at the end of a meal can be beneficial. However, high fructose corn syrup does not satiate hunger, so never ever eat it.

McDonald's never eat here. But if you do, get a large ice cream cone with your meal. It's sugar free and low fat.

Some foods can't be duplicated. There is no such thing as a good lowfat cheesecake in my opinion. However, there are alot of foods that you can swap out for a healtier version.

Cold olive oil is better than butter or any of the margerine spreads. Warning: once it's heated, olive oil is bad for you so don't fry things in it.

Rice is good for you. It grows in a field and it cooks up in half an hour or so. Instant rice is bad for you, it's made of glue and cooks in three miniutes. There's some confusion between white rice v.s. instant rice but brown rice is always the real thing as far as I know.

Mozzerella is a low fat cheese. So is Jarlesburg and Swiss.

Instant comes in a box. I've never seen it in a bag :)

Look for Basmati or Jasmine rice. It's the easiest to find, and if it has that on it, it ain't instant.
