This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I'm not sure exactly her situation. She had started teaching in county schools, but had an ongoing dispute with an administrator. She wound up leaving that position, and has been substitute teaching ever since. If I understand her current situation, she's at some privately owned daycare/ kindergarten/ summer camp program. What the rules are there exactly, I don't know, but I'm going to forward your suggestions to her as soon as I can.

Quote from: John Morrow;221405Is she allowed to send her to the office or the nurse or recommend that she get tested for ADD or other problems?  The way you solve problems in a situation like that is to make them someone else's problem and either they'll solve the problem or pass it on to someone else.  Either way, it's no longer your problem.

Ah, yes, the pass the buck and blame it on ADD tactic.  Why, I do believe most teachers already use that tactic.

Thus, we have millions of kids on brain chemistry altering drugs for a "disease" that may or may not even really exist, and even if it does, most of the kids diagnosed with it probably don't really have it anyways.*

Great solution we have there.

*I'll be upfront here about my bias - which I'm sure some will take offense at - I, personally, do not believe ADD/ADHD actually exists as a mental illness and consider the doping up of kids on Ritalin to be harmful exploitation on the level of child beauty pageants.  I believe it's a scam psychiatrists use to rake in money, parents use to avoid taking responsibility, and schools use to make their lives easier all at the expense of children's health and well-being.  And then a few years later we wonder why they experiment with illegal drugs...

Sorry... derailing. As for the frequent medication for ADD... anyone find it odd that we medicate hyperactive kids with (trying to remember the active ingredient) amphetamines?

One of the active theories is that these medications stimulate parts of the brain which are underactive in persons with ADHD.

A lot of ADD is probably simply a lack of sleep.  The reason why the stimulatns work to deal with ADD is that their brains are acting like the brains of sleep deprived people whose brains race around from subject to subject in an attempt to stay awake.  The stimulants wake them up and make their brains less desperate to stay awake.

By the way, I don't advocate or like the medication of children. The point I was trying to make was that if the child is a menace to their classmates, the teacher needs to get the child out of the class.  I'm also assuming that talking to the parents was tried and failed and that the teacher isn't simply being lazy.

I don't think she's being lazy, but she does sound overwhelmed. Because she's basically hired help, I get the impression she can't ask for much in the way of administrative help. Also, in the past when she's sent children to the office for discipline problems, usually the office sends them right back. Seems they don't want to deal with the problem. That said, pointing out the issue other children's saftey might get a response.

Also, the problems are intermittent. On any given day, a child who acted out the day before may be fine, while another formerly placid kid may go off.

Kids.

Don't you know?  In crazy conservaworld, overwhelmed is lazy.

So are you a crazy conservative, then, or a regular one?

Or to be less of an ass about it, I do recognize that I'm making use of hyperbole here ;)

Depends on who I'm talking to, I guess. I'd say "regular", but to some, no doubt, I'm a foaming at the mouth Nazi. To others, probably a neo-Lib.

Ha ha, that's a good one, John Morrow.
