SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Goodbye Levi

Quote from: jdrakehThere have already been a few, actually.

We use something very similar for my gaming group. We use a forum accessible only to the five people currently in the game, and when the sixth player returns from his sabbatical we'll make him an account, and give him access too.

We use it for background materials, and the like. It's certainly no RPG Site, or similarly sized forum, but it serves it's purpose!

Pros

Constructive community. Concrete actions such as meetings or that Goplay thingy.
Good place to talk about edgier games and designs
Moderation is not a problem but this may be due to people getting along so well

Cons

Completely out of touch with traditional roleplaying
Snobby vibe is off-putting
On the other hand, I've been following the recent lowbrow/highbrow threads both at this site and over there, and I'd have to say that the latter strikes me as a much more reasonable discussion altogether. (For one thing, whatever some folks around here mean by "tacky", it seems to have pretty little to do with how I've ever used the word.)
Previously known by the name of "GrimGent".

Quote from: Consonant DudeA general gaming website, where you can talk about WoD, D20 or Don't Rest Your Head. Or any fucking game you want.

A gaming website where you can tell trolls to go fuck themselves when they deserve it. And not only don't you get warned, but the troll actually gets his ass banned.

A gaming website where people can actually say that games rock or suck. Only they don't pressure users into a fake positive vibe like RPG.net nor do they tolerate moronic negative crusades like The Forge or RPGsite.

A gaming website that would rival the Forge as far as design and publishing tips/supoort are concerned. Only they would welcome all styles of games

A gaming website with smart, relatively unbiased moderators who can make the right judgment calls
If someone else racked it up, I'd totally play in that sandbox. I'm with Bill, the "TheRPGLounge" site looks like a nascent infant of a site which might grow and become awesome. We'll have to see.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I don't have the time to create something that big nor maintain it, though. Story Games came about because of my desire to create a small, lame, insignificant gaming forum with the single goal to make me happy when I'm stressed at work. Unfortunately, it has grown rather large and not lame, which takes its share of time. Seeing the time and effort required to run a real gaming forum like the kind you describe above (woah: In both scope and awesome) just won't happen with me. Plus, I just got a fat promotion the other day, which means even more non-gaming responsibilities sucking all my gaming time away (I love my work, though! :-) ).

I'd definitely pitch in a hand if someone else did the groundwork, though.

Until then, I don't mind seeing the landscape of microforums, each with its own style and serving its own purpose. I'd throw in that bag Treasure Tables forum (slow moving laid-back traditionally-focused game site), and The Iris Network (gender/racial/sexuality-focused gaming discussions) in there as well. On the other hand, I don't mind slow-moving forums nearly as much as I used to: 5 years ago, I used to work at a sucky job (btw, EDS is like colon cancer, but for careers) where I spent 6.5 hours of the day surfing to alleve the boredom of the non-job. The flow of RPGNet perfectly suited my needs then.  After that, I worked a better job for three years where there was still a lot of downtime to surf. Nowadays, at the job I've had for the last 2.5 years, I barely have 20 minutes during the workday (unless I'm on a concall or something) to read my own forum, much less others'. My desires have migrated more towards slower/less populated forums because of that.

For anyone who is looking for something new you can try out my forums.

I have had them sitting around for a while figuring that there were plenty of RPG forums already. It became clear to me that not one out there suites my purposes, so I decided to put it to use. It seems like I'm not the only one looking for something somewhere bewteen , The RPGsite, RPG.net, and the Forge.

RPG Admix

Yes, I'm fully aware there are a lot of RPG forums. :haw:

Just check it out, you may like the idea.

I didn't see anything in the passage Levi quoted that hasn't been said by all kinds of people in all kinds of forums

1) The forum owners *always* suffer our participation. That's 100% explicit in all the big RPG forums...

2) Lots of people claim they're better because of the games they like. It's always asinine and always untrue

If you wanted to avoid being associated with forum owners who espouse these these two memes, you'd pretty much have to quit the Internet.

Or maybe I'm missing something.

Cheers,
-E.

Quote from: TonyLBWithin the past few days I have received private messages from people on this site complaining that I am a Pundit supporter because I don't disagree with him as much as they think I should, or on the topics they think I should.

I get the same thing from people who aren't on the site, but I tend to attribute that to ignorance.  But when people who just finished watching our Pistols thread are telling me that I'm in Pundy's pocket ... well!  I have my doubts about your "Say he's wrong on his site and that'll be the end of it" argument.

[GF speaks]: "what wrong hon?"

[CV replies stunned and confused]: "I don't know, I feel as if I just read something on the internet that made absolutely no sense, and in defense my brain has blocked the experience for my safety."

[GF, quite use to this by now]: Oh, OK. Need more coffee?

[CV]: Indeed :)

Well congratulations Tony. You have the infamous honor of being just famous enough that people automatically assume you're a soldier in their little war. You're in good company, John Stewart gets this all the time.

Quote from: jeff37923Maybe so, but I don't think the drama is any more here than the Grubman vs. Hellsreach/SWSE vs. d6 Star Wars drama on RPGNet.

I'd love to be that blouse.

Wait, did you say "Labyrinth, man" or "Labyrinth man"?

...

Eh, I guess being that blouse on Bowie wouldn't be so bad either.
