This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Nope [no spoilers]
« on: July 25, 2022, 11:23:46 AM »
Did you guys see this one?

I thought it was pretty interesting, although it’s not a film I think is worth watching again.

The interesting part was mainly a fairly unique premise, and also interesting characters in interesting situations. Good cinematography too.

My main gripes would be a major plot element (one guy’s background) that goes nowhere, and some characters act in ways that make no sense (as in “this guy had a great idea but suddenly just goes crazy”). The first point seemed like such a major thing that it could have been a movie in its own right.

I'm temped to go see it but Peele has let me down twice already and I'm hesitant to give him a third go.  I thought Get Out was not nearly as clever as it thought it was and ultimately kind of shit.  Us was interesting, and had some creepy moments, but overall was just ok.  I might catch Nope once it hits streaming.

I think you’re 100% correct. As a director he has a talent for creating interesting scenes and situation, but I always find the whole plot a bit lacking.

Some might wonder of the film is woke though, and here I have happy news; the “wokest” part was also in the trailer. That’s basically it.

"Get out" already answered that :)

You aren't the only one as Nope opened significanty less then the previous film, US. This might be a Solo effect where a movie following a bad movie makes less money than it otherwise would (and the reverse is also true).

But it could be the case that the trailer doesn't really let the audience know what the movie is even about. I even read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia and I don't know what the movie is about. It appears to be some sort of science-fiction horror comedy. Not a particularly popular genre.

LOL.  About halfway through the movie, I turned to Partner and asked "Do you think we'll know what the blazes is going on by the end of the movie?"  She laughed and said "No." Near the climax, I said "OH! I get it!" and thought back over the events of the movie as they clicked into place.  The charm of the movie is finally figuring out the genre.

Finally watched the whole thing after spoiling myself on plot synopses and seeing TikTok excerpts, and it actually does hold up better when seen as an integrated whole.

It has weaknesses in hindsight, most notably that Peele has to force his final climax into the shape he wants by making one character (the film's sole significant Caucasian character, more notably) do something utterly, stupidly nuts without sufficiently foreshadowing it; this would be forgivable if it didn't resonate with the thematic thread running through both of Peele's previous films, which says, "Hey, black people? Don't ever trust white people or count on 'em, they'll let you down or eff you up; they crazy!" It also suffers, I think, from the fact that it can't really decide whether its primary thematic inspiration is Tremors or Jaws; it wants to have the comic overtones and science-fiction slant of the former but the small cast and intimate intensity of the latter, and feels uncomfortably caught between them. But it has enough spectacle (no pun intended) that I'd call it worth seeing all the same.

Watched this instead of braving the Black Friday weekend.

I figured out the "gimmick" pretty early on, right after the barn scare scene, but I wouldn't expect everyone to.  The whole thing is about 30 minutes too long and definitely feels it.  It just slowly plods along and even the climax drags.

Overall Peele fails again and at this point he's never hit the highs of Shyamalan but is quickly reaching the lows.

I find Peele to be a racist so I don't want to see his thinly veiled allegory movies. Without the social commentary I don't think he would have had any traction.

I didn’t like it. I liked a lot of things, especially the cinematography, but the plot was a mess. It felt like if Jordan Peele took inspiration from a lot of (better) movies and put together a string of scenes that, in all fairness, are interesting and well made; there is simply no connection between them. The number of plot holes in this movie is astounding.

I watched some videos on YouTube by people trying to explain why this is the best movie evah (emphasis on “trying”). Not a single one managed to - dunno - express something about why. Then I discovered that Logan Paul, of all people, had published o Twitter a negative review of the movie where, point by point, he explained why he considered “Nope” a bad movie - and I agreed with all of them. “Nope” was the movie that made me agree with Logan Paul on something. Amazing.

Of course that review was assaulted - with scarce results. Considering that the only thing I managed to understand is “This is a movie about making movies!!!!111” I would suggest “Fellini’s 8 1/2”, “Day for Night” and “Mulholland Drive” instead.
