Title: New JUDGE DREDD Movie to happen - starring Karl Urban!, They might get it right this
Post by: Koltar on August 13, 2010, 07:47:16 PM
..., They might get it right this time!

On IMDB, I found this news item :

http://www.empireonline.com/news/feed.asp?NID=28653

It looks like a new version of 'JUDGE DREDD' is being made and this time they are trying for a more realistic or believable tone. Karl Urban will be starring as Judge Dredd.  Which is fine, because in the original comics the Judge's body actually looked somewhat lanky, not muscular.

This version might be good.

Judge dredd had various looks, including the lanky, big footed early version and now the big, muscular schwarzenegger type.

AFAIC, they need to make one with Judge Death as the enemy. I mean, Judge Death is the quintessential enemy of judge dredd, just like lex luthor was superman's and the joker was batman's.

It's about time more movies were done as CGI. My god, so many movies these days are mostly cgi anyway, like avatar, 300, etc, that maybe it's time more went all the way.

It would also let comic movie characters look more like the book versions.

BTW, some people tend to toss out of date info around in an effort to appear to be oh so in the know and sophisticated.

Maybe we're both half-wrong and half-right about this.

The Internet Movie Database news headline pages treat this as a project that is on and actually happening and confirmed.

Take a look at the headlines page related to Urban:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0881631/news#ni3796504

Maybe its more of rumor happened months ago, denied, now confirmed currently - that kind of thing. Or a project that was in development until Urban agreed to it.

The stories:

http://geektyrant.com/news/2010/8/13/judge-dredd-producers-talk-more-about-the-upcoming-film-rebo.html

Most of the news strories are dated August 14th, the most recent , this one is just 12 hours ago:

http://www.sneakpeek.ca/2010/08/judge-dredd-he-is-law.html

That looks pretty current to me.

The "out-of-date" you might be referring to was the press release in January about pre-productrion artwork for a possible 'Judge Dredd' production. Looks like it was a rumor leak related to this same project.

I would only find this interesting if they had Keith Urban as Judge Dredd.

Last i heard the script was a piss poor Die Hard clone with no notable characters though Anderson was meant to be in it (though her psychic status was in question). There's a script floating around the interweb apparently. I think i'll stick to the memories of 20 years of reading Dredd in his heyday: the apocalypse war, cursed earth, day the law died, the various incursions of the dark judges, the angel gang, otto sump, the graveyard shift, mega city rackets, the wally squad, judge kraken, oz, supersurf, necropolis...

by the way possession of 20th century comics is a crime, lawbreaker. Don't make me call a pat wagon.

Dredd needs to be realised by someone who understands the dark satire of the setting. Someone who also gets that Dredd is a fascist in an insane police state  - it's the ultimate asylum. When the Judges allowed a democratic election to occur, they voted in the judges!

We need someone who did for Dredd what Burton did for Batman where he brought out the bizarre macabre gothic nature of the character and the city (one and the same); something that new Batman misses. It's still a comic character.

Yeah, I wonder how audiences would react to a movie version of the ultimate dredd story, "America" where a woman's unborn fetus is forcibly aborted against her will because prenatal genetic tests indicate the baby might have a rebellious nature and extreme charisma if born, making it a threat to the judges.

So they impose a king herod solution on the problem before it even exists.

Yeah, love to see a movie based on dredd's "America"...
