QuoteShooting suspect dead after Montana manhunt

(CNN) -- A massive manhunt involving "every guy who ever wore a badge" in northeast Montana ended late Saturday after police located the man they say shot and killed a woman and wounded two others.

Authorities in the town of Glasgow said a trail of blood led them to the alleged shooter, who was holed up inside a house.

Glen Meier, the sheriff of Valley County -- where Glasgow is located -- said the man "died of gunshot wounds." Authorities did not clarify if he committed suicide or was killed by officers.

The manhunt begun shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, following a shooting near the ambulance barn of the Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow, said Valley County sheriff's spokeswoman Samar Fay.

Immediately afterward, local officials in the town of 3,200 people launched their manhunt, enlisting the help of surrounding jurisdictions, tribal police, the FBI and the border patrol -- "every guy who ever wore a badge in this county," Fay said.

Authorities asked railway officials to halt trains going through the city. They used fire trucks to block roads leading in and out of Glasgow, resulting in long lines of cars and trucks that idled by the side of highways for five hours.

Residents were asked to stay inside, lock their doors and limit cell phone use so they did not to swamp the phone network with calls. A gymnasium where a basketball game was being held was also locked down for a brief period, Fay said.

About 11:30 p.m., tracker dogs followed a blood trail through the south side of town to a house where the suspected shooter was spotted.

Samar would not release the man's name or say how he died. "There will be a big investigation around that," she said.

The two victims who survived the shooting were hospitalized Sunday morning. Authorities said they did not know the motive for the attack.

The two victims who survived were my aunt Suzanne and her husband.  He was bringing her dinner, saw a man injured in the parking lot, rushed in to alert her,and they both rushed out to aid the injured man.   That's when the gunman opened fire.  My aunt and uncle were forced to take cover in a pick-up truck.  Suzanne was shot twice, in the thigh and the foot, and he was shot once in the hip. (And yes, they've been married a decade and I still can't remember his name.)

Not looking for vibes, just wanted to share the first thing I heard about this morning.  Weird news to wake up to.

Since posting this I had a chance to participate with Suzanne on a conference call and she told us all about it.  Sounds like it was pretty harrowing.  You know how it says the police were ableto follow a trail a blood to catch the guy?

Turns out that blood came from a bullet wound which the shooter got when Suzanne's husband, Scott, grabbed the revolver in his truck and was able to return fire. The guy had cover, so Scott was only able to wing him, but it was enough that the police could track him by the resulting blood loss.

Score one for the 2nd Amendment!

And yeah, they're both going to be fine.
