This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Is it only me who thinks this is a Spectacularly Bad Idea?

Its been a couple of weeks now, and here I've been patiently waiting to see SOMEONE else say it. I haven't found anyone else... so I guess I have to say it myself.

But still, I'm fucking shocked that none of the hardcore fans are freaking out about this. Or if they are, I don't know where they're doing it.  I mean fucking seriously, David E. Kelly is going to make the new Wonder Woman TV show and no one has gone apeshit yet?

I mean holy fuck, what the hell were the people at DC thinking?! They decided it wasn't enough to go and pick someone with ZERO experience in doing superheroes, no.  They needed to find someone with ZERO experience with action dramas. And just to top it off, they need to get someone who's completely famous for creating quirky annoying characters in stupid annoying storylines.  The show he's most famous for with a female lead role featured an anorexic incompetent who was constantly worrying about getting a man.
His other most famous female character was an obese feminist with man issues. His third most famous female character was probably Candice Bergen.  His most famous male characters, while we're at it, were an octogenarian vaudeville Jew who played up to all the terrible stereotypes, and a septuagenarian William Shatner who played up to all of his own.

I mean, holy FUCK.
Its like the board of DC comics got together and said, "Ok, we want to absolutely KILL the Wonder Woman license. I mean destroy her. We need to wreck her so bad that she'll be absolutely toxic for at least an entire generation.  Who can we get?"

Kelly is just absolutely the perfect guy to pick if you want to make absolutely sure any comic-based character fails, but Wonder Woman especially.  I say he's the right (wrong) pick in general because he's an aging baby boomer who's probably not read a comic book since Eisenhower was president.  Everything he does strikes me as the work of a man who is bound to be one of those that will not get that the Comic Book is now a viable art form in its own right, that it is NOT a "kids" thing that he would then need to "remake" in his own image with lots of obese black shemales or autistic nerd lawyers/teachers/doctors or some womanizing bostonian or Feivush Finkel. Yes, he would not understand that at all, and I'd bet a shiny penny that he wouldn't even bother to read the source material; after all, its Wonder Woman, right? Everyone knows her story, and (he'll think) its a stupid story, and what Wonder Woman needs to be is a tough feminist from the planet Jupiter who hangs out in Boston with her quirky lesbian teenage friend, an overweight lawyer, and either a wise old Jew or a crazy old WASP lawyer, either of whom she'd take advice from and forgive their often obnoxious quirks because they're so lovable.  She'll occasionally fight crime, but usually she'll instead take up whatever the current left-coast liberal democrat cause of the week is ("This week on Wonder Woman, Wonder woman fights a Tea Partier who wants to force his daughter to sign a chastity pledge!"), and she'll spend about 30 minutes of a 48 minute show complaining about her love life and wondering if it would be alright for her to date her boss.

I mean FUCK.

Anyways, this sort of decision-making explains why DC, despite being vastly superior on the creative side of its Comics company, constantly gets its ass kicked by Marvel when it comes to visual media. I mean what the fuck will they think of next? The Flash by Larry David, featuring Barry Allen's adventures with his wacky neighbours?

And seriously, I don't get why Wonder Woman fans aren't out there lighting cars on fire.  Is it that there are actually very few Wonder Woman fans? No one cares?

I wouldn't really know.  I've never much cared for Wonder Woman. This is my iconic female superhero:

I'm sure there's some outrage out there somewhere. I just know that when I hear that another superhero is getting the Hollywood or network TV treatment I assume it's going to be dreadful. If it turns out it isn't, then I can be pleasantly surprised. Since I doubt either group will ever touch my favorite hero teams (Doom Patrol, Legion of Superheroes) I'm pretty sure I'm safe.

I've enjoyed ally McBeal far more than anything containing superheroes, so this is positive for me.

David E. Kelly is a hack who gets off on cheap, self-indulgent baby-boomer bullshit.

Wonder Woman is a product that would be aimed at two target demographics: Geek men, and teenage/young-adult girls.  From what I've seen, David E Kelly has ZERO relatability or appeal to either of those groups, the consistent target market for his shows are 40-70 year old Baby Boomers with a lot of white guilt and smug ideas about how their opinions of the world must secretly be the ones that truly matter.

I was so enraged that I put all my time and resources into building a megacorporation.  In 2040, rich beyond dreams of avarice, I put my money into researching a time machine, and went back to my childhood where I used state of the art psychosurgical techniques to remove my childhood's self in Wonder Woman.

The result for the version of me now typing is that I therefore don't much care.  I do wish I'd let myself know about the 2008 crash though, I could have cleaned up shorting Lehmans.
I roll to disbelieve.

Yeah, has there been any good superhero tv-shows, ever? It's seems like a sure cancelled-after-one-season show. And hey, Kelly did after all create Doogie Howser, MD.

It depends, there were ones that were good for their time.  Batman was good for its time. In the 70s both Wonder Woman and The Incredible Hulk were good for their time.

I guess you could add to those the 6 Million Dollar Man, the Bionic Woman, Buffy (stretching it, but I guess that's kind of a supernatural super-hero show) and arguably the first season of Heroes (before it went utterly to shit).

...or it goes into production, the network or studio figures out the Kelley is fucking up what they wanted to have. So, they call in either Joss Whedon or J.J. Abrams to save the project and fix the problems. (Maybe Greg Berlanti)

Then after that Kelley is so shamed he never works in television again.

LOL.  Ally McBeal and Lake Placid aimed at baby boomers.

Meanwhile, on planet Earth, what are the producers thinking?  Why would they hire someone with a 30-year history of writing popular and compelling TV shows renowned for their character development and good dialogue?  They really should go with someone like Shyamalan - a genuine comic nerd with a track record of masterpieces, like Lady in the Water and Signs.

Worst of all, Kelly's scripts appeal to women.  Women!  How will comic collectors maintain their carefully-cultivated celibacy and reputation as the most loserish of geeks if chicks become interested in classic superheroes?
