This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Since Robert Jordan has died.  Cached posting:

Quote
Sometimes even when you've fought your best...

Posted by Wilson on September 16th, 2007 in the Robert Jordan's Blog category

It is with great sadness that I tell you that the Dragon is gone. RJ left us today at 2:45 PM. He fought a valiant fight against this most horrid disease. In the end, he left peacefully and in no pain. In the years he had fought this, he taught me much about living and about facing death. He never waivered in his faith, nor questioned our God’s timing. I could not possibly be more proud of anyone. I am eternally grateful for the time that I had with him on this earth and look forward to our reunion, though as I told him this afternoon, not yet. I love you bubba.

Our beloved Harriet was at his side through the entire fight and to the end. The last words from his mouth were to tell her that he loved her.

Thank each and everyone of you for your prayers and support through this ordeal. He knew you were there. Harriet reminded him today that she was very proud of the many lives he had touched through his work. We’ve all felt the love that you’ve been sending my brother/cousin. Please keep it coming as our Harriet could use the support.

Jason will be posting funeral arrangements.

My sincerest thanks.

Peace and Light be with each of you,

Wilson

To Catalyst: Never, never loose faith. RJ did not. Harriet hasn’t. I haven’t. Going through what we have, our faith is only strengthened. Besides, if God didn’t exist, we would have never had Jim. We did. God does. Remember my Brother/Cousin, my friend, think of him fondly and glorify God’s name.

Editor’s Note:
The entire staff of Dragonmount.com would like to extend its most deepest sympathies to Robert Jordan’s family. He touched all of our lives in some way and we wish him the rest and peace he deserves. We will be posting information in the near future about where you can send condolences. Please check the News Section for these updates.

First thing first: sorry about Mr. Jordan. My thoughts to her family.

On other topic: I don't think that anybody seriously thought that he was going to finish the motherfucking series, ever. Luckily, I got bored on the second volume; I was younger and had more patience with shitty fantasy then.
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).

Sorry to hear about his passing.  I never read Wheel of Time I'm one of those strange people who actually liked his Conan books.  I mention that because he wrote those books long after the death of Robert E. Howard.

I'm sure that some author will step in to keep The Wheel of Time going.  Death hasn't stopped plenty of other series and works from being completed or being continued.  The only hope there is that the estate and/or publisher pick someone who does justice to the works.

Damn right. I swear I'll be so damn pissed if Martin kicks the bucket before finishing his series.

Jordan is a loss the whole genre because he did a lot to bring new readers to the genre and was one of the giants of sci-fi during my time. I didn't care that much for WoT but I recognize it's impact.

I had started reading Wheel of Time before I graduated high school. For my high school graduation, I got four more of his books. During the first year of college, I read two more before I stopped buying them under the premise that I wouldn't spend any more money on the franchise until it was completed.

Which is just as well, now, I suppose.

As the series went on, I became increasingly frustrated with it, and it did go on. But I bought the rpg, and for a time, it inspired me. I'm sad the Jordan died too soon, and that he'll never complete his work. Even though it lost its luster to me, I know there were a lot of enthused readers, and even I would have completed the series to know first hand how it panned out.
God in the Machine.

Here's my website. It's defunct, but there's gaming stuff on it. Much of it's missing. Sorry.

I've got a blog. Do you read other people's blogs? I dunno. You can say hi if you want, though, I don't mind company. It's not all gaming, though; you run the risk of running into my RL shit.

Just for the record the book that he was working was the final (really) book in the series and he left copious notes and instructions on where it was going and how it would end.  It looks like the book will be finished off and published, just not by RJ.  The only question is when.

I hope he takes notes.  Lots of notes that someone else can read, understand, and use to finish his books if something awful happens to him.  Yeah, it would be a real shame for that series to not get finished.

You know, the Wheel of Time would have been a greater work of art if Jordan hadn't left the notes to complete the final manuscript. It would have been really excellent - an apocalyptic melodrama where we find ourselves constantly waiting for a final confrontation that never comes - an unintentional Waiting for Godot of fantasy. As it is, it's just really padded.

Lets hope he has a literate son, and Kevin Anderson keeps the fuck away from the notes.

post of mine copied from the other, now closed, thread:

any good summation sites out there for wheel of time? i got partway through the first, thought "not too bad, but there's no way i'm wading through all that other stuff." esp. when i'd heard a whole lot of "meh" about the rest of the series.

I read the first three and felt a slow sucking feeling as I enetered the fourth, which led to me not finishing it. My wife (girlfriend at the time) got hooked on them, and is still reading them- but these days she waits for them to hit the library. Overall, he wasn't a bad writer; I just think he lost his way with the series. He could have ended it easily in the early days, but I bet the money was too good to let go of. Anyway, regardless of my opinion of his work, 56 seems really young to die...
