This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

That's...

...

...that's a nice costume.  I totally buy it.

EDIT:  I mean the shell-head suit.  Robert Downey, Jr. in a tux -- that's not that impressive.

Hmm, do we know anything about the bad guy? Who's likely to be in there, I never was much familiar with Iron Man outside of the Avengers (or Black Sabbath)?

Drew

There's also a picture of the Mark I armour floating about, which looks surprisingly cool in a retro kind of way.

And Robert Downey Jnr. is the perfect casting choice.

Random side note, but the Black Sabbath song isn't actually about this particular Iron Man.
Bedroom Wall Press - Games that make you feel like a kid again.

Arcana Rising - An Urban Fantasy Roleplaying Game, powered by Hulks and Horrors.
Hulks and Horrors - A Sci-Fi Roleplaying game of Exploration and Dungeon Adventure

And on another random side note, not but an hour ago I heard a cover of "Iron Man" by The Cardigans.  It was double-plus cool.

And on topic...CGI. Hmm.  I can see why they chose that route, but...ho-hum.

I actually find I like the Cardigans' version more, but that's because my love for them knows few bounds, while my love for Ozzy is not so great.

Black Sabbath rocks. Ozzy blows chunks. Some may say that's a contradition, but there it is.

Textures, and their evolution ... that's what's either going to sell it or not.

When it gets hit ... HARD ... does it show the wear?  Does the armor pick up dirt and grit and all that accumulated crap?  It's amazing how much people do notice those details on the subconscious level.

Right now, what you've got is a very hawt 3D design.  But yeah, as Ian says, in its showroom state it's just more CGI.  It remains to be seen whether they go the extra mile to make the suit a living, breathing, hurting character in its own right.

Jong:  Thanks for the pics!  Me likey the CGI eye-candy.

Whoa, check these pics! Looks like the Iron Monger is definitely in.

EDIT: And so is the original armour!

It's not CGI. (Scroll down.)  It's a suit built by Stan Winston.  The pic above is CG enhanced.

Wow, that's some seriously polished, glossy freakin' metal then.  Which, yeah ... cool!  That means they can bang the hell out of it!

Well, I'm only half-wrong, then.  Actually, last night I saw some of the stills from the on-set shoots, and noticed that there was a real-life suit. I found that heartening.  I like Robert Downey Jr., I like Iron Man, but I've found the recent spate of Marvel superhero movies limp and soulless.  Over-reliance on CGI would just weigh it down that much further in my eyes.

Re: Robert Downey Jr., I can't help but wonder if the fact that he has been such a substance-abusing fuckup had something to do with him being cast in this role.  I can see some casting director making the same quip Internet-wags everywhere have been making: "Let's see...he's supposed to be an alcoholic with crippling doubts about his self-worth?  Give Robert Downey Jr. a call!"  He's a fine actor, though, and recent roles have really let him shine.  Fingers crossed that this movie is going to be handled better than, say, "Ghostrider" or even  "The Fantastic Four".

Yes, but not one of the more famous ones.  This is ... y'know ... really hard for Marvel afficianados to quite understand, because he's so damned integral to the Marvel Universe (one of Marvel's earliest characters, a founding Avenger, a major political player both behind the scenes and in the open, etc., etc.).  And yet, old shell-head has not gotten very much external press.  I was stunned when I talked to my wife about the Iron Man movie last night, and she told me that she had never heard of the character.
