Since I am the resident Hoosier of the board, I feel it is my interest to remind everyone the Indy 500 (http://www.indy500.com/) is back with a vengeance. American open-wheel racing is again united, and with many young stars, and fresh off the most exciting Bump Day in 15 years, I am ready to stir up some interest.
How, you say? First, by linking to this photo (http://images.askmen.com/galleries/model/danica-patrick/pictures/danica-patrick-picture-1.jpg) of Danica Patrick. Second, by having a FREE contest. Here's how to play: you need to respond to this thread saying you want in (and saying what # respondent you are). The first 33 respondents get drivers (http://www.indy500.com/grid) assigned to them randomly (I pull them out of a hat). If your driver wins the race, you get a totally kickass stack of RPG goodness (and I promise you, I have some surprises stored up!). I'll also give out smaller prizes to the 2nd and 3rd-place winners, k?
Entry cut-off is Saturday! Watch or listen to the race Sunday afternoon to watch some kickass racing, amazing strategy, gut-wrenching crashes, and someone becoming a part of racing history. I know most of you won't tune in. But for those of you who do, I hope you get an appreciation of the majesty, amazing history, and excitement of the Greatest Spectacle In Racing (http://www.indy500.com/). All this week, I hope to have time to link to some great finishes, terrible crashes, and wild moments that make this such a celebration for us Indy natives.
(And yes, this is open to non-U.S. folks. After all, the race has Englishmen, determined Japanese, laid-back Americans, underdog Canadians, hometown Indy boys, surprising Germans, super-speedy Aussies and New Zealanders, charismatic Brazilians, and a stew of everyone else!)
I'm In. And I'm #1. Woot!
I'm in! #2
Go Danica!
Wish I could, ya know, go this year. Alas, money is very very tight.
I can usually get my hands on pretty good tickets for less than face value...
I'm in ... #3
Me me me me me!
And don't you mean Danica HOTrick? Grrowow!
Shit, why the hell not.
#4.
#5!
Awesome. #6 :haw:
I want in. I'm #7.
Marco Andretti scored the ultimate Indy sponsor... Indie :D

Me too. I'm number 8 (unless someone is posting... right now!)
Number 9. A good strong number. :)

That is EXACTLY what I meant.
BTW, you're #10 (you didn't put down a number). We have to keep this orderly. ;) 23 coveted spots left! Get on this so we have a full field!
There are some cool sponsors this year (Marco Andretti's car looks AWESOME!). It seemed when I was a kid, every sponsor was either Penzoil or Marlboro. Not anymore!

Oil and cigarettes....ah yes...I remember it well and fondly. None of this internet wussy crap, or power drinks or shit. It was shit that would kill you or the world, and putting it on cars that go 200 MPH just meant we're all going out in a blaze of glory...
Though I do like Indiana Jones as a sponsor...entertainment symmetry fever - catch it!
Sign me up! :haw:
EDIT: What's my number? 11?
And I'm number 12. And every single one of my posts is now linking to that chick.
Sure, why not? She is super cute! #8 :)
I'll play ball. I'm number 13 or 14?
But I don't own a television.

Serious Paul, # 14!
Count me in for sure, racing is my favorite thing outside of RPGs and girls... well, ok, my wife ;) But she's a girl :) Oh, and my son, he's not a girl, but he is 2yo, so he's way cool still :) Teens are a long way off yet.
I'm in #16.
Go Danica!
I'm signed up especially for this contest, so let's hear it for beginner's luck!
I'm #17!
steve
Hey, maybe you'll get a rookie, Steve! Fitting, right!
Good to see you! Good luck! :)
16 spots left!
Go on then. I'm not much of a motorhead, but the pull of freebies is strong...
No. 18!
Sounds good to me, that makes me #19.
Rog.
Awesome! Keep 'em coming guys! 14 more spots!
While we're waiting, here's a clip of the 2006 finish (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3l5-XKvL28E)--Marco Andretti, a 19 year-old rookie at the time, lost by 6/100ths of a second as Sam Hornish, Jr. passed him. That was the year his Dad and fan favorite, Michael Andretti, also almost won it despite staring in the back row. Michael retired that year.
Presumably both the Andrettis are the progeny of Mario Andretti, the old Formula 1 racing driver? F1 is about the limit of my motorsport knowledge.

Yep. I think he won a F1 Championship in the late 70s. He won Indy in 1969. There is, sadly, the Andretti Curse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andretti_Curse). (though I think Marco, and maybe even John, have a good shot at breaking it one day soon).
Hello...
I am following Zach's instruction and I am registering. I am No. 20!

Whereas I am inclined to suggest that registering on this site just to mooch off a contest of this nature seems rather crass.
Certainly it's up to Zachary, and I know him to be a rather decent fellow, but if it were me, I'd be telling the lot of them to bugger off.

I will say that if you are bummed about where you are or who you ended up with, remember 3 things: 1) Not all the best drivers are at the top. Many of the most respected drivers qualified lower, but will still be right in there. I'd urge you to check out more on your driver! 2) There are prizes for 2nd and 3rd, too! 3) This is the Indy500, where there are ALWAYS surprises and upsets. Anything can happen!
If you want to know more about your driver or have an Indy500 question ask me! And let the groans and cheers begin!
Just so you know, Zach...my wife and I think this is hilarious, and we were probably gonna watch the race anyway. Only I think she has to work.
The only cool thing about having Rinky-Dink Cableis that I get the Louisville stations, so on Race Day, we can watch live (it's blacked out otherwise). I'm not a huge fan but I've watched it a couple of times and I found it mysteriously engrossing. Maybe it's because Indy Cars don't make me think of rednecks, like NASCAR does.
I need a copy of Formula Dé...
First of all, thanks for running this. It's kinda fun.
Second, when's the race? What network is it broadcast on? How long does it usually last?
Oh, and THREE ladies driving this year? Two of 'em cute? Swank.
EDIT: Holy Crap! Milka Duno is, like, Lady Buckaroo Banzai! Dig:
Quote from: Wikipedia Knows Everything!Milka Duno (born April 22, 1972) is a race car driver best known for holding the record of highest finish for a female driver in the 24 Hours of Daytona[1] as well as her current participation in the IndyCar Series. Duno is a former model and has thus attracted much attention.[2] Her racing career is unusual because of her late start; she did not start racing until she was 24[3] and her experience prior to racing was mostly academic; Duno holds Master's Degrees in Organizational Development, Naval Architecture, Maritime Business, and Marine Biology,[3] and spent some time working as a naval engineer.[4] Duno struggled in her rookie IndyCar season and was placed on probation.[5]

Quote from: StuartWell, starting in Row 6... but Buddy Rice won the 2004 Indianapolis 500.
Oh yeah. The two Buddys. Both former winners. :)
Oh, and the race is on ABC. I like the pre-race festivities--if you love history, no race has such a surge, such a living vibe of history behind it.
Here's the TV & Radio Schedule (http://www.indy500.com/news/11180/92nd_Indianapolis_500_Television__Radio_Schedule). It's this Sunday, 11-12ET is the pre-race on ESPN2, then at noon ET you can switch over for the race. It'll go until 4, 4:30, max.
If you can't watch it, Indy500.com and ESPN both have good race trackers.
I like to use them, customize my view, switch things around, check on various drivers, check lap speeds, while listening to the radio coverage.
This will make watching the race sooo much more fun.
Quote from: ElHombreThis will make watching the race sooo much more fun.
You and I both know Marty Roth is going to pull some crazy Canadian Black Vodoo Magic Shit out of his hat and the 33rd spot and

does finish 33rd, though. I need to check my supplies.

He's an Aussie, coming over from Champ Car. He won the event at Long Beach this year, so he already has a win under his belt.

I'm genuinely curious as I don't know off the top of my head but IIRC it's rare.
I'm only one of two draws marked as a former winner
and a fan favorite. So I'm doomed...

By request (thanks, Wikipedia): Bruno "Junky" Junqueira (born November 4 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_4), 1976 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976)) is a Brazilian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil) racecar driver and veteran of the Champ Car World Series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champ_Car_World_Series).
Early career
Junqueira started racing go-karts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go-karts) in Brazil and dominated Formula Three Sudamericana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_Three_Sudamericana) before moving to Formula 3000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_3000). He tested for the Williams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WilliamsF1) Formula 1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_1) team for many years, and came close to landing a race drive in 2000, losing out to Jenson Button (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenson_Button). He rebounded from this setback, winning that year's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_Formula_3000_season) International Formula 3000 Championship.
[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bruno_Junqueira&action=edit§ion=3)] Champ Car
In 2001 Junqueira joined the CART (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CART) Championship Car (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Championship_Car) series driving for Chip Ganassi Racing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chip_Ganassi_Racing) where he had immediate success, capturing a win in his 14th race and finished second in points with two wins the following year. In 2003 Ganassi left to the rival Indy Racing League (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indy_Racing_League) and Junqueira joined Newman/Haas Racing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newman/Haas_Racing), the top team remaining in what was now the Champ Car World Series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champ_Car_World_Series). He captured series runner up honors in both 2003 and 2004, capturing two wins in each of those seasons. He also drove in the Indianapolis 500 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indianapolis_500) four times for both Ganassi and Newman/Haas in one-off appearances. In 2002 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_Indianapolis_500), he qualified for the pole position (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pole_position), and he twice finished 5th in the race.
In 2005, Junqueira was injured in an accident in the Indianapolis 500, while lapping A.J. Foyt IV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A.J._Foyt_IV). Due to his injuries, he missed the remainder of the 2005 Champ Car season. Junqueira was the Champ Car points leader at the time, having won the second race of the year in Monterrey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monterrey), Mexico. Veteran Oriol Servia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oriol_Servia) took his place and finished runner-up in the standings.
In 2006 he returned to the cockpit at Newman/Haas but for the first time in his career he did not win a race and only finished fifth in the championship while his teammate Sebastien Bourdais (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastien_Bourdais) won his third straight title. He was replaced in the second Newman/Haas car in 2007 by rookie Graham Rahal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Rahal) and Junqueira signed to drive for perennial backmarker team Dale Coyne Racing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dale_Coyne_Racing) as teammate to the inexperienced Katherine Legge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katherine_Legge). However, Junquiera delivered results like that team had never seen before, finishing seventh in the championship and three consecutive podium finishes late in the season, nearly capturing the team's first win at Circuit Zolder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circuit_Zolder).
[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bruno_Junqueira&action=edit§ion=4)] IndyCar Series
Prior to the 2008 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_IndyCar_Series_season), Champ Car unified with the rival Indy Racing League (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indy_Racing_League) to form a single united IndyCar Series (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IndyCar_Series). Junqueira will return to Dale Coyne Racing and be the driver of the #18 car for the team's first season in the new series alongside rookie Brazilian countryman Mario Moraes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Moraes).

I'm thinking top-10 for my guy. Sounds reasonably optimistic without going nuts.
It's spell casting time
and they all need to rhyme
so here we have a go with it
I predict my place in the winners pit

Jeff Simmons could easily do that. He was 11th last year, and has a reasonably fast vehicle. He also resides in Indy, so I like him. :)
Oh! Simmons also ran in the Indy Lights race out there today (http://www.indycar.com/news/?story_id=11503), finishing eighth!
Here's the schedule of events, for those interested. Some of these may seem odd to those who don't know the race, but having Gomer Pyle and Mrs. Brady sing is part of the tradition:

Here's what's gonna happen:
Dan Wheldon, my guy, is gonna win. Yes! And I will trumpet the fact, and wave it in your faces, and laugh at you and you will cry! And all the game stuffs will go to ME!
THEN, when it's all Vampire and Wraith and Star Wars d20 books, then I will weep and you will laugh! At ME!
So it'll be a comedy. Three out of four stars.

Quote3) Ryan Briscoe, #6 enelson (16)
Check him out on Wikipedia:

He runs for Penske and, well, that is all I know about him...but I do like Briscoe County Jr!!! Great TV show!
Go Ryan! Go Racer X!
Rather than ship my first place prize to me, I'll pick it up at GenCon and buy you a cold beverage Zachary the First!
Well....my driver's never won a race, so maybe this is his time. Of course...he's only placed 2nd 3 times in his career in ANY race, so eh.

Yeah, but he's a fan fave, and another veteran. He also spent a year in a wheelchair before getting back into an IndyCar. So you know he has cajones.

Hey, if you win, its a deal, bud. Glad to hear you'll be going!
(Indy has the Greatest Spectacle in Racing AND Gaming!) :p
Here's a sample of a start (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44SwOQ2-Efw) from a few years ago (I wish the video quality was better), starting with Jim Nabors singing "Back Home Again in Indiana", followed by the famed starting command. Then the cars all start up, which is awesome. You really cannot believe how freakin' LOUD the cars are. Then, they all get up to speed, and it sounds a little like a TIE fighter squadron screaming by. :)
Looky the cars go around and round
all day long you hear the sound
in the end who'll be standing tall
lots of fun and good luck to all
:steeringwheel:
New thread (http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10516) for the race itself!!!! Good luck!

Most people in today's world
do have cajones, Zach. It's typically where they keep a lot of their stuff.
¡MIRA!
ESTOS SON CAJONES:

Oh! Perhaps you meant
cojones? No, I'm not linking a picture of those. Nossir.

Yeah, spelling in any language is not my strong suite. I'll have to tell my old Spanish teacher when I run into her about that one.
Let us close a curtain of charity over the rest of this scene, and go to the new thread.
You can say "cojones" or "huevos".
Quote from: Dr Rotwang! You can say "cojones" or "huevos".
In Andalucia, they said "huevos" and some other word I don't remember.
Huh! I wonder what it was. I lived in Mexico, see.
Hey! Races!
