This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I got my scooter!!!

So, after about 3 weeks of agonizing and obsessing over scooters (and eventually giving up on a plan to get the Stella, sorry baby), I decided on a 50cc bike just for zipping around my little town. Unfortunately, by the time I settled on this, there were none to be found.

So I went on a bit of a quest.

I was looking specifically for a Honda Metropolitan (sometimes it's called a Scoopy or a Jazz, depending on what country you are in): it's 4-stroke, gets about 40mph (45 on a downhill, haha), 100 miles per gallon, and.. it's cute as a button. Around my work, there was a girl who had a Yamaha Vino classic that I liked (and this looks about the same).

So, local Honda dealerships were out, other places were out. I was about to give up when I was talking to my office mate about it. I had the big list of bike-shops open on my computer and I had marked off most of them, although one I had gotten an unanswered call.

He said "none of those places had it?" and I said.."yeah!" and I picked up the phone just to prove it, calling the last shop on the list. The guy on the phone says "Yeah, we have three of them right here.." (And they were going fast, apparently $4 gas brings out the scooter fanatic in people).

So that was that. I jumped in my car and went down into Baltimore, and there it was. I bought it, called my friend to help me transport it back to my place, and by this time it was dark, so I didn't even get a chance to ride it that first day.

Since Saturday morning I've put 105 miles on it. I rode it to work today (wee!). I calculated that every day I ride the bike to work rather than drive, I save the price of a gallon of gas.

But the real reason I love it, is it's stylish and fun as hell.

Congratulations! I read your other thread with interest 'cause I'm having similar thoughts.

"Down into Baltimore", huh? I live in Catonsville. Are you in the county?

I am in Columbia, now (Howard County), which is perfect for scootering. But I just moved from Pasadena (Anne Arundel) which probably would have been ok too.

There's a bunch of little pockets of scooter-love all around Baltimore and the surrounding areas, but there was recently a rash of thefts that went around-- half-brained local criminals were stealing them thinking they were "some form of dirtbike", and then finding out that they couldn't escape being outrun on foot by the cops.

Congrats on the scoot, but stay safe and all that jazz.  Remember; a full-face helmet only looks goofy up until the point you have to have reconstructive surgery to your jaw.  Same thing applies to wearing a leather jacket, gloves and pants as there is only so much skin they can pull from one place to put on another if you fall down go boom.

If I can get anything this year, I'd love something from a 250cc to 500cc just so I can get reasonable speed along with a nice (enough) gas mileage, but we'll see...

Stay frosty on the roads, Maw, and don't get goofy.
I start from his boots and work my way up. It takes a good half a roll to encompass his jolly round belly alone. Soon, Father Christmas is completely wrapped in clingfilm. It is not quite so good as wrapping Roy but it is enjoyable nonetheless and is certainly a feather in my cap.
