Greetings all. In the apparent absence of on OT forum I figured this place would do for saying hello. I'm getting back into gaming after a years-long layoff and, after finding my way here off a blog post linking to the best & worst RPGs threads, I reckon both the size and the general tone of this place quite splendidly aligns with my taste. The recent hubbub vis a vis "story" (or is it "Story"... or """STORY!"""?) I found very engaging, and I was impressed at the depth of thought and dedication to articulation on display there and so had to join up.
But enough crotch-nuzzling. The real scoop is I've been out of the hobby far too long and find myself a genuine asstard noob of the first order on the topic of the modern gaming scene. I humbly submit to learn at your feet. All I know is that WoD is still emo, the new D&D is proper spastic and it's now okay to admit that the Forge is a total shit factory (deep down I did harbour a feeling that playing a Reified Universal Monad in a pantheistic proto-Mormon revisioning of World War I probably wasn't the future of roleplaying).
The upside of this daunting process of rediscovering the hobby is a return to Beginners Mind, which serves to cast the previously-tolerated absurdities of it all into harsh relief (particularly with regard to fantasy settings - common sense revolts at the swathes of irrational crap that goes unaddressed in that game genre). Thus I expect to hold forth with a fair bit of exasperated iconoclasm in the near future, because frankly a lot of this shit be fucked, yo.

Welcome. You can pick up your wellingtons, butcher's apron, and spiked club at Production, Logistics, and Commissary. Head protection is recommended, but not required.

Welcome to theRPGsite, WF. :)

Welcome! One of the good things here is we talk about games. A lot.
What games are you interested in?
-
Welcome! Don't forget to take a trip over to the Citadel, we are trying to keep a Beginner's Mind. :)

Welcome!
Also, a total noob has given me a new signature, so kudos to that man!

Welcome aboard!
You will be happy to learn that Traveller has come around full circle from Classic Traveller to Mongoose Traveller.

Thanks for the warm welcome!
Of course my actual play experience is shrouded in the mists of memory and I'm sans group at present, so my input here will be novice and entirely superficial. I look forward to sharing my impressions of the games I'm getting back into and having them challenged.
As I say, I have views on fantasy and its myriad illogical tropes, which annoy me only because I think I actually love the genre despite all it does to repel sensible appreciation. I grew up on AD&D 2nd, MERP and Palladium Fantasy, shortly thereafter drifted into a debilitating ether-huffing habit... or was it Rifts? Same difference. Then Heroes Unlimited. CP2020. Conspiracy X. Millennium's End. CoC, Kult, WoD, etc.
Recently Eclipse Phase piqued my interest and is the reason I'm interested in the hobby again. I'd also like to start work on a Rifts-esque pulp-athon of imbecilic proportions (although I'm not sure my prefrontal cortex can tolerate the Palladium rules), and also the western genre has me quite enamoured (Coyote Trail any good?)

Someday I will have time to write my Thundar-inspired Cartoon Action Hour RPG setting "Second Sun." It has many things in common with Rifts: Magic, Ancient Technology, Nazi Ants. Oh wait that's just Second Sun.
I found Coyote Trail quite good, I also rather like the recently released Wild West Cinema (only PDF at the moment.) I'm a friend of the writer of WWC however and play tested the game/commented on early drafts. I think you'd be good with Coyote Trail though if its got your attention.

DEMON DOGS!
Mok-accompanied adventures across a far-future wasteland America being my major source of inspiration, I must state that I am intrigued by your ideas and wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

It is a template--albeit we don't call them Mok's instead its an exemplar of the "Unintelligible Warrior Monster" or "Unintelligible Monster Warrior" whichever. I've so much to do to get it written though. Mind you I want to keep most the villains "Kirby-esque" in their design.

Heh.

Eclipse Phase is indeed a great game.
And I agree that the Palladium system has aged ungraciously.
If you want to punch jackbooted thugs in an Earth wrecked by a supernatural apocalypse, you could do far worse than to check out The Day After Ragnarok (here (http://atomicovermind.com/blog/?page_id=339)). It's not as gonzo or over-the-top as Rifts, but it's solid, post-apocalyptic, pulp fun.
