Doctor Who - New Series [SPOILERS]
« on: April 13, 2010, 02:55:20 PM »
So I've just caught up on it on iPlayer after being away for Easter (cycling the length of the country for charidee).

What did you think?

I was watching the first few minutes and wasn't too sure, but as it went on and then I saw the second episode I really quite enjoyed it, particularly over much of DT's run. Plenty of nods to other sources (I liked the Time Bandits bit) and although at times it felt like re-writes or variations of earlier episodes I quickly got used to Matt Smith and much preferred Amy Pond to most of the other companions we've seen recently.

Time will tell, but I'll actually be making the effort to watch it this series.

Matt Smith so far is better than David Tennant who has to be the most overrated dr who ever. Not that much different, but better written.

Stories still need more tightening up and not being too reliant on whimsy or fancy, and some effort to address gaping plot holes wouldn't go amiss.

But so far so good.

Not looking forward to seeing James Corden though.
“Ghost Whistler” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

Saw the first new one with Matt about an hour or so ago.

Pretty damn good.

One Complaint -  What The HELL did they do to theme music??!!?

Its like they forgot they had percussion available. The Master's insane timelord drumbeat/heartbeat wasn't there any more.

It sounded like a tinny audiotape recording of the '70s version of the Doctor Who theme music.

James Corden? Really? Fucking hell. I thought having Peter Kay was bad enough (Although I was quite happy with Sophie from Peep Show cropping up in the first episode as it didn't jar).

This one seemed a little rushed and I didn't enjoy it as much as the others. I know people seemed to be getting excited about the Spitfires in Space from the trailers but they really didn't do anything for me and other than pulling the slightly ridiculous bomb defusing out of her arse Amy didn't seem to do a great deal. Sort of torn between wanting some two parters to fill in the gaps in the story and not wanting to spend too long in wartime London (didn't we do that with Ecclestone and Captain Jack thanks?).

At least we've seen the back of the Daleks for this series - can we please go somewhere new now? That'd be brilliant thanks.

I really think t was way too soon to have a new dalek episode especially after they were supposedly (snicker) exterminated not long ago, and why did they have to go with mighty morphin power dalaks anyway?

The new bronze daleks were really good looking, with a high tech look that was still menacing due to the metallic tones, the new design, yuk. And they didn't even get rid of that goddamn plunger and replace it with, say, a mechanical tentacle or something that looked high tech.

I'd have preferred a new cyberman ep, those new cyberman costumes are beautiful.

White Dalek - GO!
Blue Dalek - GO!
Green Dalek - GO!
Red Dalek - GO!
Orange (orange?) Dalek - GO!

Awesome (rubbish ending though)

*SIGH* I thought tne revamped bronze daleks were an infinite improvement over the old ones (Well, except the the dreaded heavy weapon dalek I['d have like to see more of..) but the new ones look more toylike and are a big step backward.

If you have to have an engineer dalek, and I can understand that, why not just give him a different arm, like in that last episode with Eccelson, to mark him as an engineer instead of a silly paint job?

While the Dalek episode wasn't bad, I don't particularly like the new Daleks or the fact that the spitfires made it to space in mere minutes.

Now, the next episode ROCKS!

the new darleks are very toyetic(to borrow a phrase from freakazoid) i bet that was a factor in why they were given different colours more than any other reason(gotta get the kiddies to spend more cash even if its on a repaint afterall).

Yeah, kinda like ships in the star trek universe are supposed to be modular and capable of a variety of missions (Well, not counting klingon ships because the klingons are too technologically behind the feds to make multi role vessels, unless you could "conquest", "rape" and "Pillage" to be 3 different roles..) and yet they have to have new and radically different hull designs in every movie.

I see your point, the new daleks still suck though. Do they give every color a different voice? I haven't seen it yet as I watched Dr. Who on the SFC...

a slightly different pitch to there usual voice yeh with the boss having the usual deep tone then variations of the usual tone for each new type, to be honest the vent at the back of the new darleks is more intriguing to me at the moment than any other changes coz its got me wondering what its for and why its there lol who knew vents could hold such mystery :)

Weeeell, just watched part two of the angels storyline. To nab a football cliche definitely a game of two halves for me.

River Song re-appears and spends most of the episode being irritatingly capable. Off to another planet and what's with the camo on the holy men? Why are these futuristic space marines dressed like the current British army? It faded into insignificance though as the episodes went on, although I thought they would have taken heavier weapons than assault rifles... It would have been nice to have a bit more back story than squaddies with clerical ranks too but never mind. Statues weren't as scary as last time but the bit where Amy was trapped was good. Angel Bob was very library planet though. Not a terrible episode but I wanted to see how the second went with the premise.

I really enjoyed the second episode though. The Doctor put River her in her place a couple of times, reminding us just how beyond anyone else he is and a suitably claustrophobic retreat to the control room. The forest on board the ship was good (Silent Running nod?) - it felt like it wasn't all CGI and corridors and gave you an idea of the size of a ship that would be needed. Quite happy with the reveal on the crack so far, more to come but hopefully the tension will build rather than it being a throwaway in the last episode of the series. Throw in one of the most emotional clips I can remember in DW too...

Octavian: I will die in the knowledge that my courage did not desert me at the end. For that I thank God and bless the path that takes you to safety.

DW: I wish I'd known you better.

Octavian: I think sir, you know me at my best.

As for Amy jumping on the Doctor I thought it raised the issue that everyone thought they were going to see towards the end of the series and dealt with it confirming the Doctor as someone far older than he looks and with a detached view completely at odds with Amy.

Yes, I remember the red and gold "samurai dalek" emperor had a deeper voice than the stock daleks in the supposed last dalek episode.

You know, ALL daleks were supposed to be in that shelter when they detonated the "reality bomb" and destroyed the universe, so if a fleet of daleks were outside it it must mean they were meant to be destroyed or were too incompetent to reach the shelter in time, or maybe they were defective daleks assigned a task to keep them out of the shelter when the reality bomb was set off...

Ok, that might explain the mighty morphin power daleks after all.

Didn't like the second episode as much. Crap ending.
Amy is annoying me, another two dimensional action grrl whom the universe revolves around.
The continued portrayal of the doctor as KNOWER OF ALL THINGS THE GREAT DEUS EX TIMELORD SOLVER OF RIDICULOUS PLOTS is piss stupid now.
Confused metaplot stuff.

Must try harder.
