Title: Guess the movie game
Post by: Battlemaster on June 26, 2022, 05:41:32 AM
This is a game for hardcore movie fans.

Make a brief poem or limerick about a movie, old or new, that is at least somewhat known.  See who guesses the movie.

Here goes:

A murderer utterly silent
kills all victims quite neatly.
A taker of lives unrepentant,
removes all evidence completely.

The blob, sorry.

Didn't see that one coming, though it totally fits. Seldom thinking further back than the 80s, typically, especially in pop culture, and seeing past the 90s only dimly. It's a weakness of mine, and it cost me here.

I put this one in another forum, but see if yoh can get it.

At an articulate sphere's behest

A defender wakes as another earns rest.
and in the end, once again, evil fails.

Given how "Show unread posts since last visit" works, everyone probably saw the answer.

NGL, saw oggsmash answer this one. That thread's pretty popular these days, so Pat might be right. Had to look up the anthology as well as the orb bit to understand the film and the connections to the poem, but I feel like the fact that I could do that shows it fit pretty well. The narrator's Loc-Nar, huh? Feel like I had heard that name referenced at one point but had no context prior to this. (I feel like I'm not necessarily the best audience for properly guessing on this game, unfortunately, since I'm not great at pop culture and am broadly an uncivilized brute. Still, enjoy the poems and watching other people try their hand, as well as spinning the wheels in my brain to no effect.  ;)  )

Over on the movie movie site people get into movies that are very little known but didn't get heavy metal. Ill try to avoid the esoteric ones.

Ok, here's one I got. Since this isn't a movie page I'll give hints.

A 100° winter
with several folks slain
blame it on microwaves
and hope that it rains.

It's a British scifi horror movie from the 60's  that had a prominent British scifi horror actor.

How about haiku?

suicide is a
game I play she's bright, alive
I love her she dies

It's a geek film, but not the typical geek genres of sf, fantasy, or horror. Dark comedy, plus. Predates the wood-grained boxes. Don't expect anyone to get it.

Before I resorted to properly reading the hint I was looking into 100 Degrees Below Zero and trying to see if rain or microwaves somehow come into a plot involving volcanic winter or whatever.  So I was pretty damn far off. I knew for sure at that point I wasn't getting it without doing some digital research, so to speak. I don't know how if at all to do spoilers on this site, so anybody wanting to try to guess it the proper way, be forewarned.

Is it Night of the Big Heat? I really ought to look into the cinema classics a bit more, especially horror, though I've never really been able to get into that genre for some reason. You seem to know that area of artistic expression admittedly a fair bit better, but I appreciate the references and poems because it gives me stuff to look into.

This is gonna sound sad, but even with a brief internet search, I'm not 100% sure what "the wood-grained boxes" even are/were. Oh, millennials. (Though according to wikipedia, I might actually qualify to be Gen Z. Generation categorization is messy, apparently, and there seems to be weak agreement on who is what these days.)

Ah. Hence why Wizards may have marketed some things as the Red Box, trying perhaps to make a reference and capitalize on that nostalgia? Or maybe why White Box is an OSR product line that respects the original foundations of the hobby.

Anyway, thanks for the info. Cool to know more about the origins of the hobby. (And to now have a more narrow timeframe. The internet shall help me find your movie, mwahahahahaha!)

Wood grained box: Early printings of OD&D
White box: Later printings of OD&D
Red box: Mentzer/BECMI basic set
Gold box: The SSI computer game series
There are more box colors, but those are the most commonly referenced.

A lot of colored box references I had seen but never understood or questioned are suddenly starting to come together in my head and make sense.

Figured out that it came from an attempted cure from cancer, and eventually after some fruitless searching with just this and the other poem clues you gave that weren't line 3, realized I'd actually have to figure out what that meant, lol. So, then I eventually went for blood as the answer, then after more fruitless searching realized that veins are oftentimes pretty close to the surface, meaning that what lay beneath was probably bone instead, which fits with the scientists being called spineless (I had been searching for cowardly researchers instead of the more literal term as well). Add in mono-limbed and weird sound making, and my computer's search engine eventually closed in on it. Potential spoiling guess ahead.

Island of Terror, another British classic, I am informed.

Also, have you made any progress with Pat's haiku? Even with the powers of the internet and a will to cheat, so to speak, I'm admittedly still stumped.

Yes, you got it. I'm Not trying to be unsolveable like some people on the movie site. That would frustrate too many people here.

I've no idea about pat's haiku, I was sort of thinking 'heathers' but no. I don't look them up if I don't get them.

Now then onto another one sans clue.

From the cold depths of space came huge orbs ocular,
bringing terror and death to earth of a kind most sinister.
They had a craving for human brain meat,
but could withstand no kitchen's heat.
Their end came is a way most spectacular.

Now try this one without google for a while, it's an. Old movie shown a lot.

I like the poem, and feel like it's probably gonna be super obvious once somebody solves it, but currently have no idea what it could be. Tried talking through some possibilities and brainstorming with some friends while gaming. Even phoned for help, so to speak, from some older family members who wound up calling me over unrelated stuff once we inevitably started chatting about the weather and the like. Was a proper flurry of incorporating it into social activities with minimal context, lol. Evidently I need more classic sci-fi fans in my circle of orbit, clearly.  ;D

Oh dwellers in therpgsite.com, I call upon you, avenge me in the absence of Google's monopoly upon the contents of my mind and admittedly solicited guiding hand in my beliefs. Only you can solve this poetic riddle of cinema now.

OK OK I guess this one is a little obscure if you're not a major B movie fan, so it's hint time.

It's a 50s movie with 2 titles, the most popular one contains the name of a body part.

I was able to Google it, but that's really obscure. It's a movie only people who are really into a particular era of B movies would have even heard of, much less remember enough to put together all the clues. Since this isn't that kind of site, it might be a good idea to stick to movies that the typical geek is familiar with.

Based on the poem, I'll wager we should be looking for either brain or eye. Though I guess Pat will have beaten us to it via Google. Bested by my own tactic!

Ok the crawling eye was not a great choice.

BUT......

Here's one I wrote for this board  about a movie you should have seen and if you haven't you should ASAP.

The people of the trees suffered lives stressful, hopeless and bland
'till their world was taken into a mother's strong, capable hand.
Soon even those born impoverished, desperate, angry and lowly
could taste deeply the joy of taking everything a lot more slowly.
The bliss fell to a messy end when things stopped going as the matriarch planned.

I will say that the movie I'm thinking of does have a bigfoot who drinks cans of coca-cola. So maybe I should edit that, but I guess its coke on the shorthand and coca-cola in the long form. It's not horror.

Welp, the movie I was hinting at was "Cry Wilderness", a movie I'm only aware of because of MST3k.

Mine was "Alien" so Battlemaster discarded the right answer.

Freudian nightmare, as in a dark mirror ---> Alien has been described as a movie full of freudian fears and perversions (the Alien spying on Ripley at the end while she undresses), with everything surrounding him being a dark mirror of our reality (Organic vs. Technologic...)

Genders reversed, bones on the outside ---> it is a male astronaut that is "raped" and impregnated; the Alien has bones on the outside - another example of "dark mirror".

Parasites infect flesh and machines ---> Kane is infected by the chestburster; the Alien "infects" the Nostromo.

In the dim glow of lovecraftian stars. ---> "Alien" is considered one of the best lovecraftian stories ever made; the stars in its universe are distant and remote, whereas the bright and plentiful stars in "Star Wars" suggest a vibrant universe full of life.

The connection with "Heavy Metal", however, was a bit trickier. It was with "B-17", the episode written by "Alien"'s writer Dan O'Bannon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsLyG6A13f4&ab_channel=ScotianBrunswicker), and that be described, too, with my verses (check it if you are unsure). "Genders reversed" is the only tricky line for "B-17": at the end, in the planes' graveyard, you see Amelia Earhart's plane - with Amelia becoming famous for what was then a mostly male role.
