This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Google Chrome

I finally had enough downtime this morning to download the new beta of Google Chrome.  In fact, this post is one of the first uses to which I've put it.  My impressions so far:
  • Fast. Really, noticeably faster than IE
  • Clean looking
  • A counter-point to "clean looking", user controls aren't entirely intuitive -- Where are my imported bookmarks?
  • Opens new tabs automatically instead of new windows
  • Allows me to customise the appearance of individual web pages
  • Performs spell-check automatically
It reminds me a lot of when Firefox first came out.  I dropped IE entirely for Firefox, but when I migrated almost exclusively to a work computer I went back to IE out of habit.  Like Firefox, Chrome is clean and fast, not bogged down in a lot of the hard-programmed chug-chug of IE.  I'm interested to see if Chrome will support third party themes the way Firefox does.

Has anyone else given Chrome a go?

[Edit: D'uh.  Add integrated Google search to the list.  That's a nice feature.]

I've got it. I'm mostly happy, but it doesn't import from anything other than IE which sucks. All my stuff is in Opera, and I don't feel like adding a bazillion bookmarks the hard way.

I also don't like the history method they use. In Opera, if I click the wrong place and close a tab, it's the first thing in my history. In Chrome I have to remember the DAY I opened it.... which, since I leave my PC up most of the time, means I may have opened the tab a week ago.

It is nice and fast. Even with my (current) 14 tabs up. Which all loaded quickly when I opened the browser (it's set to remember the tabs that were up when I close it).

Which, I think, underscores the real purpose of Chrome -- to steal market share away from Internet Explorer.  They're probably not particularly concerned with Opera or Firefox.

This is a beta, though.  Write to them and tell them to expand compatibility with other browsers.  I already have a couple of virtually inconsequential little things to suggest myself.

Downloaded it, trying it. If my computer goes funny I'm holding you responsible.

I have it and imported everything from Firefox nicely, even the bookmarks bar.

I am quite happy with it, and probably will switch from FF in the end. I'm quite fond of Google stuff.

If your computer goes funny, you should thank me for the unexpected levity.

By the way, a number of my niggling little complaints are going by the wayside as I discover how Chrome does things differently.  Little idiosyncrasies.  As with any new application, there's an initial learning curve to catch up with.

Am I missing a link. Is this only for vista?

Thanks,

Oh'p!  Sorry.  Looking back over my posts, I realise that I've totally forgotten to even mention what Chrome is.  Chrome is Google's new web browser, and it's ostensibly usable with any operating system.  They've released it in beta form this last week and placed a link to it on the Google search home page.  I just figured everyone used Google search every day. :o

Here's a link to the Chrome home:

The beta is windows only, though, I believe.  Linux and Mac are in the works.

Holy cats!  They got Scott McCloud to draw a comics adaptation of the Chrome design mission.

As I would say holy crap, that definitely merits a holy cats!  More and more I am becoming both frightened and seduced by google simultaneously.  It's like  a super hot demon woman who just looks so good but you know that after the fun and games is done some horrible shit is going to happen to you but you just don't care because she is so hot!

I am not sure with how comfortable I am with the browser becoming a repository for apps (I'm referring to the first page to the McCloud comic*), but I think it probably is realistic that this is what is happening.  It saddens me because it means that older computers are going to be become obsolete at a faster rate.  Currently, even if you couldn't run any newly released apps, you could still check your email and run a browser, but even that won't be the case much longer.  Not really Google's fault, though, and it does make sense to design a browser that is adapted to those needs.

*which is a great example of this.  I've turned off javascript on Safari because it just slows the crap out of everything.  But that comic is delivered via javascript.  So I have to turn on javascript to see it.  That is something that definitely could have been put together in html alone.  I don't like that move by google, I have to say.  Maybe Chrome will run javascript so it isn't such a processor hog and maybe people will start writing tighter javascript.

Ooh, well that Chrome Process Manager gives me a little bit of wood.  Makes a ton of sense.  I shall read on...

Holy crap it's got its own task manager!  Okay, I'm starting to get sold here...

Whoah!  Did you check out the Privacy Mode?  You can create a window that when you browse in it, nothing is ever logged or stored on the computer, so no need to empty your cache or whatever.  Porn at work, here we go!

I am about 70% erect at this point.

"Sandboxing" the security code of Chrome is theoretically very nice, we'll see how it plays in the real world.  Everything in your browser is completely locked out from your operating system, preventing a webpage from getting into your registers, launching apps, whatever.

I love the little backhanded swipe at Vista's permissions structure.  Damning with no praise.
