This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Anyone curious about what that doofus James McMurray does for a living check out the February 19th episode of Future Weapons at 9pm on the Discovery Channel. I work on the NLOS launcher.

NLOS?  Noodle Launcher - Optically Sighted?

Will have to watch that.  I actually like the show but just don't seem to get much time to watch television that much anymore.  But I'll make time to see this one.

Very close. In fact, if you hadn't been the exact opposite you'd have hit it on the head. :)

But it actually launches noodles?  Cool!  Lamentably, I don't have cable and won't be able to see it in action.

James McMurray

Yes. With military costs mounting and death tolls being so poorly accepted by the world media, the US government has decided to try and win hearts and mind with Ramen instead of Napalm.

Ian Absentia

Hey, there's a lot to be said for that tactic.  Well-fed people don't have nearly as much incentive to go to war.

Also, I was only half joking about the noodle launcher, as I know there have been a number of (quite controversial) modern developments in non-lethal weaponry.  Wrapping someone up in a noodle from 30 meters seems like a fine idea (well, until they suffocate as a result, which leads to the aforementioned controversy).

So atheists have been abused, treated badly by clergy or they\'re stupid.They\'re just being trendy because they can\'t understand The God Delusion because they don\'t have the education, plus they\'re just pretending to be atheists anyway. Pundit you\'re the one with a problem, terminal stupidity.

The LAM, while an excellent idea, doesn't actually exist. For whatever reason the administrator types waaay over my head have decided not to develop it yet.

I'm assuming they will at some point because it combines firepower and UAV surveillance capabilities into a single efficient package. I'm really curious to see how the show refers to them, which will depend on how long ago it was filmed.

It could be because there's a lot of overlap between it's capabilities and the existing (and fairly mature) Predator drone and the Predator can attack it's target without blowing a very expensive engine and sensor package up at the same time

If I'm reading this right, the NLOS is designed to fill the gap between the 120mm precision-guided mortar munition and a cruise missile, yes?

James McMurray

Yeah, but without the LAM it's got a lot of overlap with other systems already out there and/or in development. It's an interesting piece of technology, at least from my end of it (the 1s and 0s side), but it could be so much better if it were to work as designed.
