[Films] Idiocracy

I didn't really think it was that great. It plainly wanted to be a biting satire, but I only found isolated moments to be inspired. I did find it ironic that the "stupid" humor that the masses of the future will enjoy was, in fact, the comedic backbone of the film for the most part.

I feel the same way about most of Mike Judge's work... Office Space had a few really memorable moments in an otherwise drab story, but Office Space was nowhere near as self-important.

Office Space was an outstandingly good comedy.

Yeah it was.

Don't get me wrong, I like Office Space. But all the best gags are in the first forty-five minutes or so, and then the rest of the film just sort of drags along through a botched heist schtick.

The "beating the printer" scene is priceless, though. I feel the same way about Idiocracy, except nothing really comes to mind as particularly brilliant.

Quote from: pspahnLook, I know it's been out for awhile, but it still amazes me that some people haven't seen this yet.  It's got to be the most entertaining modern satire I've seen in years.  Please go rent it or buy it (I've seen it for $5 in the Wal-Mart bargain bin) and enjoy.

And I can't shake the idea that there is an RPG in there.  Not sure if it would play out as funny as it does on TV, but the setting book would be a fun read.  :)

I just ordered a Brawndo T-shirt from brawndo.com.  Brawndo's got what plants crave.  It's got electrolytes.

You are kidding me?   This was the worst movie I have ever seen.  All I could think about was how I wished I could have the time I wasted watching this piece of tripe back.

I am a fan of Mike Judge (Office Space, etc) but I watched this movie and all I could think was that he was way off his game.

Blackleaf

Yeah?

Shut up.

Huhn Huh.

See, I felt the same way after I watched Austin Powers for the first time.  Then I watched it again with some friends and realized it was hilarious.

I've started calling movies like Idiocracy, Austin Powers, Little Nicky, Grandma's Boy, Ali G, etc. "mood comedies" meaning you really have to be in the right mood when you watch them, otherwise you'll HATE them.  :)

I didn't know who Mike Judge was until I read this thread.  I resisted watching Idiocracy because the premise sounded stupid.  Then I happened to be flipping channels and came across it during President Camacho's speech (in the link given earlier) and I knew I had to watch it from the beginning.

ticopelp mentioned that it seemed self-important, but I didn't get that at all.  It's a lighthearted dig on the way most people think the country is heading, taking it to extremes to make the point while still being entertaining.

Invite some friends over, kick back with a few beers, and watch it again.  :)

Quote from: StuartI used to have a co-worker who told me about a time she showed a friend a photo she took from the window of her plane as they flew over some clouds.

Friend: "What are those?"
Co-worker: "Those are clouds."
Friend:  "Well, what's that then?"
Co-worker:  "This?  It's the wing of the plane."
Friend:  "Yeah RIGHT."
Co-worker: "Um...what?"
Friend: "So your plane was ABOVE the cloud?"
Co-worker: "...yeah..."
Friend: "Yeah.  Then where's HEAVEN then?  Hunh-hunh."
Co-worker:  "..."
This pretty much trumps any stupid-person story I've ever heard.  I'm in awe.  Maybe Idiocracy isn't as extreme as I thought. . .

Look here.  I know you like to take every opportunity to tell everyone you're a teetotaller with a gamer wife, but some of us need beer because we don't have one of those, okay?  So just deal with it!  :)

You know what else is a good, oft overlooked movie? The Ten. I mean, c'mon, "Rated R for pervasive strong crude sexual content including dialogue and nudity, and for language and some drug material."
