This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Film and TV criticism done right
« on: November 08, 2020, 10:48:10 AM »
Came across this guy Critical Drinker on youtube. To get a flavour, check out his review of Ghostbusters 2016...

He knows something about how story and character works, and he doesn't mind calling out some SJW bullshit.

I've seen his stuff, he's pretty good, but not quite as good as some others I've seen.
My personal favorite is Dominic Noble. Here is his LOST IN TRANSLATION of Blade Runner:

This one left me in stitches:

Jesus Fucking Christ, is this guy honestly that goddamned stupid? He can't understand the plot of a Star Wars film? We're not talking about "Rashomon" here, for fuck's sake. The plot is as linear as they come. If anything, the film tries too hard to fill in all the gaps. This guy must be a flaming retard.  --Mike Wong on Red Letter Moron's review of The Phantom Menace

FWIW, I snagged the last sentence of his (every) critique and use it to finish Skype calls I do at work.

Red Letter Media used to be my source of laughter in between decent movie reviews. Then they just kinda gave up and focused on the laughter. Its still decent but not on the same level as before imho.

I like their Re-View stuff, and the TNG retrospectives.
The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

I have no use for hour-long movie reviews.

Frankly, it's hard to schedule hour-length YouTube clips in general, and if I do, it's because they are full of information, or doing something like camping that I can't easily do myself.

Sadly he is a better critic than a writer. I've been giving his books a go on Audible and, while he has improved from his first, he hasn't improved nearly so much as I'd like, right down to having A Mary Sue character... just not the Main Protagonist, which makes it slightly more bearable.

For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.
