You can see this sort of proselytizing going on here. So the evidence is overwhelming. This is a site for Fanboys.

Pretty much every site is for fanboys.:haw:

Fanboys aren't a bad as long as they know and admit it.

Quote from: KoltarIts also silly arguments about whether Babylon 5 is better than Deep Space Nine.

Of course that's a silly argument.  It's clearly Babylon 5.  There can be no doubt.

Bollocks again!

DS9 was an idea stolen from J Michael Straczynski because he had originally pitched the idea for Babylon 5 to Paramount who stupidly rejected it and thus Warner Brothers got the award-winning series. DS9 is merely a poor borg-assimilated clone of the grandeur that is Babylon 5!

(How was that? Fanboy enough? Or should I have added more misspellings and exclamation points? :D  )

Man, I loved that show as it came out, but I rented the first disc of the second season the other day, and well... Two things struck me- even though the show started airing in the early nineties the second season seems very eightiesarrific- and in a bad, bad way; the second thing that I realized is that tolerance for bad TV acting is not what it used to be.
I Know I really enjoyed the show, especially from the third season on, but I am afraid to look at any more of it, now.
But as for DS9- I knew that was crap the first time, no need for a rental.

On Topic: I have never played an RPG that I didn't have some problem or another with, including my current favorite True20. They all suck in one way or another; I just use whichever one sucks the least (from my perspective), but if someone else thinks my game of choice sucks too hard to use, I'm not likely to argue or disagree- after all, maybe it does for them.
If that makes me a fanboy, so be it.
You are posting in a troll thread.

HERESY!!!!!
Gene Rodenberry had a bastard son JM Straczynski, who ran off with his holy idea of a space station in a far flung corner ( or should that be curve?) of the galaxy!

Consonant Dude

Quote from: AnthrobotSo you're objecting to enthusiasm.
Why does it seem tiring or boring to you?

Keep in mind Droog originally said "blind enthusiasm". I'm with him in that respect. It annoys me when enthusiasm is blind. When critical thinking takes a hike or when appreciation turns into unhealthy worship. Note that this has nothing to do with dedicated enthusiasm. You can love a game, enjoy it even exclusively, without being a "fanboy".

Also, I disagree with Seanchai. I don't find any particular value in either BRP or Wushu. They're both games I have tried and find weak. But:

When Balbinus talks about BRP, he makes me curious. I keep thinking if he was around, I'd like to roll a character and let him re-introduce me to the system. That's healthy enthusiasm.

When Kiero talks about Wushu, he makes me nauseous. I keep thinking if I had ink to waste, I'd print myself another copy just to wipe my butt with it.

So no, I don't think fanboy is exclusively a term people throw around about people they don't agree with. It certainly can be used like that. Just like any term can be. But it doesn't have to be that way.

I tend to think of Fanboys as being more than simply those with fannish enthusiasm.  Fanboys are, in my definition, incapable of recognizing anything outside their fandom as being Of Quality.

For example:  I can argue about "Han shot first."  I have an opinion on the subject (Lucas was mistaken to make the change.), I can and will defend it.  I think the Star Wars Saga is six films worth of awesome, and enjoy each of them.

But I can also recognize that Werner Herzog's Aquirre: The Wrath of God is a far, far superior movie to any of the Star Wars films in terms of plot, characterization, and message.  I can recognize that Peter Greenway's The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover is art in way that The Phantom Menace can never hope to be.

It's about being able to maintain perspective.  It's about being able to recognize that while Frank Frazzeta's art made be Made of Awesome, it doesn't belong in a Louvre alongside the Mona Lisa.  It's about being able to understand that Batman: Year One is not great literature comparable with the classics.

When I think of Fanboys, I think of this guy I used to know who would loudly proclaim that South Park was the most intelligent, funniest show on television.  Ever.  And was entirely serious.  This same guy would claim that anyone who listened to Brittney Spears was completely lacking in taste, and then in the next breath tell you that the music for Final Fantasy VII was "better than Mozart."  And he meant it.  No perspective at all.

I disagree about Batman: Year One.

But I think people are far too snobbish about what is and isn't literature or great art - to hear people tell it, there IS no great literature, movies, art or music being made now, and thats just bollocks.

Whether The Watchmen or The Killing Joke deserve a place at the lit table with Shakespeare and Dickens is an arguement to have (I personally think they do), but its not Fanboyish.

Now, were you to claim "Dragonball Z" or "Ambush Bug" I might agree with you.  But Batman Year One is a great piece of storytelling, and one of the finest examples of what the comic book art form can do as a storytelling vehicle.  Don't know if its "lit" worthy, but its very very good.

To me, "fanboy" is the absence of reason, critical thought, and objectivity.  I'm a Steven King fan.  BIG fan.  I'll buy any book of his sight unseen, because more often than not, his stuff is at least good, to me.  I own almost all his books, and I scrounge yard sales and flea markets trying to find old first printing hard covers.

But the final book of Dark Tower sucked.  Christine sucked.  Dreamcatcher wasn't good, but not awful.  The Regulators was forgettable.  Tommyknockers sucked HARD.  He's not perfect, and when you write as much as he does, you'll write some stinkers.  Theres a difference between fan and fanboy.

And South Park IS one of the most intelligent funny shows on TV ever.  Its a very intelligent social and political commentary wrapped in dick and fart jokes.  Ditto Simpsons and Futurama.  Family Guy tries really hard to be this relevant, but while its amusing and entertaining, it fails miserably.

Actually, I like BOTH shows.

If it wasn't for PARAMOUNT"s dumb decision about the way they arranged the DVD menus - I might be playing my TREK DVDs more aften.

 As it is, I play BABYLON 5 more often than I play DEEP SPACE NINE.

Also"Firefly" and BABYLON 5 are my two favborite Sci-Fi Shows available on DVD, with modern BATTLESTAR GALACTICA a very close second place.

Irony in what you said? In that GenCon video - they did find me standing next to the GURPS/SJG booth. Look carefully at the YouTube video next time you play it.

droog

You're a yob or you're a wanker -
Take your fucking choice;
So who is your favorite genius:
James Hird or James Joyce?
You ever seen a live performance?
Join the wanker club.
You thought I meant table top dancing?
You're a yobbo, bub.
What are ya? Yob or wanker?
Wankers once used mobile phones,
But now that's sorta changing;
And yobs once lived in cottage homes
Ain't social change amazing?
If a yob and wanker want a girl,
The wanker guy will get her -
Both are equally ugly,
But the wanker hides it better.
A wanker fights inequality,
And for people's rights;
A wanker fights class prejudice.
A yobbo just fights.
Yob or wanker - wanker or yob -
Pass me the brush to tar ya;
Make your choice then live your life:
Come on, pal: what are ya?
The past lives on in your front room
The poor still weak the rich still rule
History lives in the books at home
The books at home
