This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Online Game Store Emailings?
« on: February 28, 2007, 01:36:24 PM »
I am coding over at YGN and I came to customer emails on the project list. We currently have an opt-in newsletter and a separate opt-in update notification system. These are controlled by the admin and not available to the general membership. On one side you have the technical issues (not big) and on the other you would have the rules issues concerning the extension of this functionality to the member companies.

So, the question, assuming an opt-in system, is would you want to receive emails from the members (individual companies of an e-tailer mall site) or would you prefer one bulk email from an admin or neither (opting-out)?

I am torn, personally on this. Frequency matters a lot. If I am receiving mall emails every 20 minutes, they go on the spam filter if not the black list on my email server. However, if they are useful and reasonably pace (even as frequent as once a week) I can live with it.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Bill

I don't want e-mails from any online business, unless I specifically ask for them.

An opt-in option could be put inside the user preferences stating "If Would you like to receive emails from our affiliates pleas go here." then give them a page with  the names of companies and a yes/no check box.
