This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

ENWorld's Continued Problems
« on: August 21, 2008, 07:59:23 AM »
So, yesterday, their boards are down again.  Its like we either get a time out or some other sort of issue every time I try them.  When they do work, they're incredibly slow.  I know they're looking to upgrade the servers, and for their sake I hope it works.  I can ignore the Edition Wars, but I can't ignore slowdown and no access.

You know, I kind of have a prejudice against ENworld because in my (probably mistaken) perception it seems to be basically D20 and D&D only.  They sort of represent in my head the vast majority of mainstream gamers that for reasons I can never comprehend have no reason to do anything but play WotC's D&D.  How much of that prejudice is true?

The main reason I don't actually go and properly investigate myself is because I find there choice of board colours to be very difficult for me to read.  And they are all about the giant avatars and fifty gazillion little doohickeys on the left hand side as well.

The board colors literally give me a headache. And the site is always slow if I can even connect, which I usually cannot. I only go there if I have too see something that was pointed out to me or to post news. It would be nice if they actually got the site working. They are always holding fund raisers, yet the site never works properly. It's a shame.

I think you're right as to the player base- there's some OGL stuff too, though.
No offense , Walker, but they play it because it's fun for them. I will admit, however, after talking to a couple of fellows at the FLGS, that I'm a bit mystified by certain segments of this population myself.  I always have been, I guess, but my RL contact with them has been minimal until quite recently.

But they're having a good time, so it's all cool, and I've met some White Wolf guys who had a bunch of the same exact issues. What are these issues? I can't really explain them, actually.

Dead on.  If they concentrated on making the board work first, then started messing around with the colours, they would have fewer problems.  When they switched over to v2, and disabled the option for the 'Player's Handbook' scheme, I stopped reading over there.  The black-on-black colours and white or light grey text is an abomination.  Seriously, Morrus, use your head.  We all know you aren't an angsty teen goth; skim a few pages on site design.

Absolutely.  It's not what they do play, but what they don't (and not just play, but seem to be utterly ignorant of) that mystifies me.  But this is in all elements of popular culture, not just gaming and I've never understood it there either.  It's also a different conversation, one that will allow people to get all outraged so I'll stop there.

Thanks for the explanation. It doesn't sound like there is a lot there that I'm not already getting.  It's just that sometimes when there is a bit of dryness at the sites I regularily frequent, it would be nice to have another side option that is semi-interesting.  So I keep my eyes open.

Well, Eric Noah created the place originally as a D&D 3.0 fan site.  Pretty much exclusively.  If you are looking for anything even peripherally related to D&D, you will find something there.  If you want True20 or d20 Modern, keep walking.

Thus has it ever been.

Which, aside from the colour scheme foisted upon them as a joke by Satan, is the other reason I don't go over there anymore.

Looks like the server drive is going really well though.  Hopefully Russ will be able to purchase/install it soon.

The color scheme used to bother me on the old site; I used the blue one when it was there.  But I switched back some time last year, and it doesn't bug me.  I know that adding new backdrops is on the agenda, but basic functionality is more of a priority.

That is what I was saying before.  Go back to a basic colour scheme, get it working, then fiddle with the EMOWorld theme.

I like ENWorld a lot, lots of cool people over there. However, the boards are kind of a disaster to look at and the slowness makes it pretty well useless.

I posted there a lot more back when it wasn't so slow. That said I donated $10, hopefully with an upgrade they can get it moving better.

I doubt they have optimized or cleaned up the database since Eric turned on the lights.  If they want to solve their problems through brute force, they will need to get something like $50 from each and every unique IP hit.

Well, I guess we'll see.  They're currently up to almost $5k, including a couple of folks who threw in a grand each.  Damn!

If I dropped a grand, I would make sure I was getting a piece of the publishing arm.
