Title: Dungeon Meshi
Post by: nielspeterdejong on February 26, 2024, 05:29:38 AM
What do you guys think of Dungeon Meshi? I honestly quite like the designs for the gnomes, as well as how well thought out the author made her world. It's rather refreshing.

It has a very D&D feel to it despite not being based on D&D.

The dungeons being a source of mana and having to effectively learn how to grow and cultivate them like a plant is interesting. It is an outgrowth of the "Living Dungeon" concept that dies the rounds in some lite novels.

The Anime leaves alot out though from the Manga. I followed the manga up till about the big dragon battle and then lost interest when the plot took a severe swerve.

I've finished the manga as I was following it for years.

IMO its one of the best fantasy manga out there that isn't another isekai tropefest. It has good humor but also does not shy away from tackling more serious stuff. And it still keeps a lighthearted tone even when stakes are raised so you don't feel like it completely switched to something else. The smaller worldbuilding we get from early chapters do a wonderful job to prepare you for some of the later explanations. On a reread, I was very happy to see some of the details that I missed or dismissed as funny banter.

I'm not so sure about not being based on D&D. Author Ryoko Kui is an RPG fan, as she has made fanarts of game characters and even listed some of her favourite games in a recent interview. It may be based on Sword World which was based on early D&D.

One of my favorites. I was hoping the anime would come out so people could start talking about the manga.

Its not too bad. Its a little more humorous than your typical fantasy setting, sort of in the vein of many comedy isekai (really kicking off with Konosuba). I personally prefer Record of Lodoss War, but its not bad. Its basically following a theme of Fantasy Food series like Restaurant to Another World (which is reverse isekai) and Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill (which is isekai).

Dungeon Meshi came out before both of those books, so it's not really following.

I just started watching the show recently. I forgot about the treasure bugs, like the gold bugs in Fiend Folio but with extra variants like a necklace centipede. Cool stuff.

LOL!

Figured some people might get a snicker from this fan art. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End has been fantastic (and the fan art coming from it is superb).

Its like Sword Art and Hack Sign. Few are aware that those were both written for the same contest if I recall correctly, or at least written around the same time.

Then again I saw someone badmouthing the original Buck Rogers serial for ripping off Star Wars opening recap crawl. You know, the series that came out in 1939.

Sword Art and .Hack both launched in 2002.  The .Hack franchise launched with an anime while SAO didn't get one until around a decade later in 2012.  Because of that .Hack became well known in the 2000s while SAO remained fairly obscure outside of Japan.  Because of that, a lot of people assume that SAO ripped off .Hack.  They became aware of it in 2012 when the anime came out so they assume that is when the franchise was launched.  Now that SAO has become well known and .Hack has faded into relative obscurity, people are saying that .Hack ripped off SAO.  People are fucking stupid.

That happens ALOT!

I saw one moron who was badmouthing the original Buck Rogers serial for "ripping off" Star War's opening credit crawl.

Numerous idiots badmouthing the Buck Rogers TV show for ripping off Star Wars when in fact it was in development at the same time as SW.

I think the anime glosses over a bit much. Feels like they are trying to rush to the end almost.

Otherwise well drawn! and it retains the feel and overall pacing and story of the manga.

Well, the latest bit of insanity is the Antis on Twitter are freaking the fuck out because Chilichuck is a shota. This is the same kind of asinine hand-wringing and teeth gnashing that happened with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and all the halfwits crying their eyes out because Studio Trigger said Rebecca is a loli. I'm convinced that the Tumblr Millennials, GenZ and now GenAlpha are full of schizophrenic retards who cannot handle even the barest hint of fanservice. Which is also fucking hilarious because all 3 groups are the most likely to wear their sexual orientation on their sleeves for everyone to see. I miss when the normie trash didn't know what anime was and Otaku like me could keep our weird, racy cartoons amongst ourselves and gatekeep the undesirables.

Oh and they found out Izutsumi is 17yrs old and thus 'pedobait' and 'How dare the animators show her getting naked when Laios and Chilichuck are watching!'

Well, not just that. We're talking about normie trash that don't understand the weeb subculture. To them, every loli or shota is underage.  Despite the impossibility of such things even within the fictional setting itself. Ryuji and Misato Wakana (My Wife is the Student Council President) are canonically at least in their mid to late 30s (their daughter is 17) and they're a shota and a loli. Same with Kinue Hayase (Masamune-kun's Revenge), who is 42yrs old and a mother of 2.

They literally cannot grasp that a loli is just a short petite woman. The crazy motherfuckers attacked a 21yr old cosplayer who is short and petite who cosplay as Tatsumaki from One Punch Man, calling her 'pedobait'. They don't grasp a shota would be called a 'manlet' in real life. I have, no shit, seen these brain dead twits say that if a woman is under the height of 5'6, then she's 'minor coded' and therefore 'pedobait'. That's saying that the vast overwhelming majority of women worldwide are thus only attractive to pedophiles.

Well, you've already done some soft gatekeeping: I had to look up several of those anime-related terms to even understand what you were saying.

Couple of art sites have in the last few months flipped out and declared -anything- that looks underage is verboten! That includes hobbits, halflings, probably anything shorter than 6ft because there is no limit to how insane the woke can get.
