Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

While we do have a free speech policy here and you are free to use it, do understand site disruption and thread stalking are not something we allow. Not saying you are doing either of these yet. But I am letting you know that repeatedly ruining discussing with intentional derailment and/or going from thread to thread to single out a particular poster for hostile treatment, can be something that leads to a ban. If you want to swear at me, be my guest, but do not mistake my gentle reaction to your provocations for a complete lack of rules on the forum. If you need a refresher on any of the finer points here I am happy to direct you to relevant stickies.

What about the "Divergent" stories and movies - about a society that pressures people into faction groups?

I know its yet another 'young adult novel 'dystopia' thing - but the first book and movie was pretty strong - then the author seemed to get lost in the woods a bit.

Here's an old-school option: Karel Capek's War with the Newts.

Though I haven't read them since they first came out the "Marshal Law" comic books were great social commentary/social satire.

The Divergent movies are about what would happen if we based our entire society on a high school cafitiera.

Wasn't this mostly a parody of judge dredd?

A good book. His play R.U.R is a good read too.

Yeah that's a big part of it, but still was a good story in it's own right.

Quote from: BedrockBrendan;1002244Again, not too worried about the parameters. So long as you think it genuinely is social fiction, feel free to discuss it. If someone brings up something you think isn't social fiction, probably best to just ignore it and post about something you consider more relevant.
What if we have a literature degree and yet have never heard the term "social fiction" before this thread and have no idea what you mean, at all?

The label isn't important Skarg, it is a thread dedicated to science fiction and fiction that deals speculatively with the development of society in stories like 1984, Utopia, Brave New World, A Clockwork Orange, etc (hopefully in a non-pretentious way).

Let's not derail into semantic but even Wikipedia, usually a literary wasteland, has a defintion of the social novel.

It is a usually a English style/genre so perhaps that's why you're not familiar with it.

Skarg

I had/have no desire to discuss details of definitions. I just had no idea what was meant. The first idea I had was that it might be akin to "social media" so I was thinking of books written by multiple writers on forums, or by having the public make suggestions, or roleplay characters, or books released as serials on social media, or forum fan fiction, or something.

My impression is that fiction with social themes tends to suffer overall when the social themes get so much focus (either by the author or by the reader or analyst) that other aspects are neglected and even the social themes then ring hollow and/or seem forced or artificial.

Simlasa

When I hear 'social fiction' I usually think of J. G. Ballard... his stories are often about odd subcultures developing amid modern spaces and relationships, or because of environmental changes. Comical and frightening without being too preachy.
'High Rise' is probably my favorite of his.
