This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

How a character dies isn't as important as how other people react to his death. This creates some real narrative opportunities, for instance starting a film with someone saying "T'Challa is dead!", and then exploring not just how and why, but the consequences.

Maybe, but it also eliminates an iconic and very well received character whose stories they had only begun to tell. It will also mean that Black Panther is dead in the movies, but alive and well in the comics, which creates issues when adopting comic storylines into future movies.

This last point is the weakest. There are a huge number of differences between the comics and movies -- keeping continuity between them has never been a major point, nor should it be. I think the comics have been useful to mine for the best storylines -- I thought the Killmonger storyline was a great example of this. But Black Panther in the comics hasn't been solely about the character of T'Challa. It is a title that has passed from person to person. There are a lot of cases of characters other than T'Challa who have been Black Panther in the comics - including Shuri as well as Kasper Cole and even Killmonger.

The only two significant recastings in the MCU have been Hulk and War Machine. The Hulk was largely by ignoring the original movie which effectively isn't a part of the continuity, and War Machine was a minor side character prior to replacement.

I think it will work better if the actor playing the new Black Panther can fully own their role -- bringing their interpretation to the role, rather than being tied to how Chadwick Boseman interpreted T'Challa.

Also, I like the idea of Shuri as Black Panther because thus far in the MCU, T'Challa hasn't been portrayed to be a scientist -- and we've been lacking superhero scientists in the MCU. In the comics, Black Panther is a brilliant scientist and engineer who is a peer to Reed Richards and Tony Stark. In the MCU, Reed Richards has been missing; and Ant-Man is Scott Lang rather than Hank Pym (Pym hasn't interacted yet with the rest of the Avengers). There is Bruce Banner as a scientist and Tony Stark as an engineer, but they could use some company.

Disney+ currently has 86.8 million subscribers, and their CEO is projecting they'll reach 230 to 260 million by 2024. What's really remarkable is their 2024 target was 60 to 90 million, last November. A year in, and they're at the high end of their 5 year goal. And if Disney's other 2 streaming services are included (Hulu and ESPN+), the 2024 projection is 300 to 350 million.

Disney's stocks rose 14% on Friday, at the news.

By contrast, Netflix had 158 million subscribers a year ago, may be approaching 200 million now, and is expected to be around 300 million by 2024.

Less adapting comic storylines the better.

They have not been doing much of that anyhow. So far all these movies just play lip service to this or that storyline, if even that. Especially as the movies progressed they have kept the titles of some storyline and a few characters. And little else.

While I don't have much hope for any of those titles (except Guardians), I'm glad that the Mouse feels confident to be expanding their franchises.

Have they announced the Guy Williams Zorro series will be going up on Disney+ yet?

Don't care about anything else.  :)

Meanwhile I look at this news as 35 new potential trashfires I can warm my cold black heart beside.

Disney's problem isn't that they haven't found the right properties yet. They've still got that backwards thinking going on for them. Disney's problem would appear to be that they have no idea what their actual business is and no idea how to recognize and groom actual talent.  That's a rot in the heart of their business that isn't going away any time soon.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.
