So Disney's 4th Pirates movie is announced, and the subtitle is On Stranger Tides.

For those who don't know, that's also the title of Tim Power's extraordinary pirate/voodoo/fountain of youth supernatural epic.

If this is an actual adaption of that book, color me fucking giddy, and get ready for some hardcore pirate rpg fever to hit.

Apparently it is supposed to be about finding the Fountain of Youth. At least, that's what I read someplace.

I really, really hope that it won't be.  Any degree of faith to the original would make it a horror movie, and a fairly intense one to boot.

Given the series, there would be no such thing.

From what I understand Tim Powers is actually working on the conversion to screenplay...
Not that that means much. Disney could always stick a Jar Jar in there at the last minute.

Imperator

My bets are on the movie being a gigantic turd.
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).

Hairfoot

Ah.  Wrong "Pirates".

Not that Disney couldn't make it exciting.

Well, the third one certainly fits that description.
I really like the first one, and the second one appeals to me because I've always liked that particular plot formula (multiple parties hunt for fight over an item to somewhat comedic affect) since I first encountered it in Dumas.
Aside from the generally crappieness of the story, my major beef withthe third one was the supporting cast (everyone who wasn't Johnny Depp, really) and the way they handled the Commodore, who I felt was the only other interesting character in the entire film.  I think they're getting rid of most of the other actors for the next one- which can only help.
I remain cautiously optimistic.
You are posting in a troll thread.

It's 50/50 for me. Might suck. Might not.
I'm a big fan of Tim Powers. We'll see.

Though Tim Powers' involvement could certainly improve the script, being a great writer of novels doesn't translate into being great at scriptwriting. Guillermo del Toro is a brilliant director and a shitty novelist.

Granted. *nod*

That's how the third movie ended, so I'd assume it's going that way.

According to what I've read, only Depp and Rush are interested in doing anymore films, which is fine by me because they were the best actors involved anyway.

My main hope is just that they manage to recapture the fun of the first one again.  3e was BSG: Pirates in so many ways, basically doing it's damnedest to destroy any sympathy for any of the characters in the series, while presenting a plot "as twisted and impenetrable as a granite octopus", to borrow a Yahtzee quote.
