This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Charity idea, Voting & costumes, uniforms & voting...
« on: September 06, 2008, 01:21:28 AM »
Over on the Goldenrod & Fluffy there are also political threads...but thats not the direct topic here. In one of those threads I said I'm not really going to decide who I'm voting for till Halloween. One frequent poster came back with:

Quote
Something oddly apropo in that

So, I said this in response....almost as a joke:

Quote
Anyone dare me to vote in full Klingon garb?

Would you donate to a charity if I did?

- Ed C.

This of course led to people promising to donate charity after I found out locally that as long as they could match face to my I.D. photo it was okay with them if I voted in Klingon garb.

This resulted in this thread over there:
http://forums.sjgames.com/showthread.php?t=44528

Basically, If I  a lot of people say they will donate to a charity(or charities), then I will vote on Election Day , here in the states wearing my Klingon Garb.
IF I get on local TV news I will NOT say what party or candidate I voted gor - but just urge people to vote that day.  I tend to vote in the morning, before 8:00am most years.

Can any of you guys think of a good non-political charity?
 Recommend one?
Personally, I'd like it to be a charity that benefits kids or families that don't have a lot - because thats the first week of November and so close on the calendar to the Seasonal Holidays for many people.

You should contact some of your local media outlets and ask them which polling stations they will be covering with camera crews and when.  You may want to tell them what you're planning, lest they fear terrorism.

If you know more Klingons you should get them to participate as well.  that will generate more media attention.

Also, you should have "canned answers" ready in case anyone asks you who you voted for.  You know "Klingons prefer to vote in secret, but we do support a policy of honor in warfare!"

Klingons don't vote, the challenge or assassinate the leader and fill the power vacuum

Romulans at least have a Senate.

My local board of elections supervisor has already told me its fine with them, that they're okay with it. She said as long as they can match my face to the one on my I.D. photo - then its cool.

This may be one of the few things you & Agree on , Jacalope. I had already decided that if I DO get on a local News camera then I am there just to urge people to vote and get the vote out.

I will NOT express a preference for either party or candidate while in the Klingon garb. The main idea is to get people off their duffs and to their polling places. Side benefit - people are promising to donate to charity if I do this.

I sort of have a tradition of voting way early in the monrning - before 7:45am or 8:00am. So, if I did get on camera iut would get on the moprning or noon news.

No more worthy charity could possibly benefit from a warrior's honor.

I'll pitch $100.00 into the ring right off the bat.

Damn you, hot-stuff, don't upstage me. :)

Either way, I'd give up $100 for the cause.

I'll agree with you, WK. America should be ashamed of how its vets have been treated under bush, and helping them is a matter of america's national honor, IF it has any left.

If koltar does this stunt, I'll send something to the charity you mentioned.

As much as I would like to see someone smash his face generally, I have to caution koltar that some people might take this as mocking the electoral process, or insulting to those who've fought for this country. I know what he's doing and to my shock I approve of it, but some people might still consider it a mockery or insult to america or american vets, so he should be careful, announce it in advance, send a letter to the local newspaper, etc. so people understand what he's doing and why.

I can't express in mere words what I think of you, Demonoid (rest assured that my only "comment" is that I can still read what you write) but I do appreciate that you honestly honor our troopers.

I can't imagine doing ANYTHING that draws attention to our veterans' situation is a mockery, however, and I do feel that Koltar is being truly sincere. Then, again, I like him more than you, overall. :)

Thats the one that the Freedom Concerts benefited last year - right?
(I went to one of those concerts)

I even remember Alan Colmes handing over a check for that.
Thats the kind of charity I'm looking - for non-partisan or even "trans-partisan" (whatever that means.)

Is this only for domestic charities ? Because here are a couple that could (always) use some cash:

Since the theme (so far) has been war and all....

David,

That was just an accidental and unintentional theme so far.
Someone on the SJG forums suggested the National Center For Missing And Exploited Children,  while another suggested Doctors Without Borders.

My attitude is it has to be a GOOD charity that gets it money to those its supposed to benefit, and as non "political" a choice as possible.

More than one charity would be okay with me, but for those that don't declare and are letting "Me' choose a charity - then I'd love some good and worthy suggestions.

Well, I couldn't care less who you liked or not.

As to not being able to express your feelings towards me in mere words, given you hardly know me you must be quite linguistically challenged.

As to my post, maybe YOU can't imagine koltar's stunt as offending people, but maybe you are not an inbred, pinheaded neocon with 6 webbed toes per foot and more teeth than brain cells. But there are a lot of them out there. (Just look at rush limbaugh's ratings) and one of them could take koltar's stunt as an affront.

It would be amusing to hear someone punched him in his fat, smug face, and doubly so if it were another republican like he obviously is, but if he was doing something genuinely good I'd hate to see it screwed up by some ignorant conservative (As if there was any other kind) at the polling place.

That's why I was suggesting he make certain his local newspaper prints something about it first, to at least give him a chance to pull off a decent act without it being marred.
