(BSG) Maybe We'll Finally Get the Version that Doesn't Suck

My complaints about nBSG have nothing to do with any sense of loyalty or desire for faithfulness to the original series, which was largely cheap knockoff crap.

No, my complaints stem solely from the fack that nBSG is one of the most godawful pieces of overwrought melodrama ever foisted upon the viewing public.

Anything that wipes out that stain on television from the minds of viewers and replaces it with something good is quite alright by me.

I understand that the series can be too dark for some persons, as tastes will vary and all that. I don't see the "misery porn" on it, no more than I would, for example, in a series set on France in 1941, where the Resistance is being screwed and the Nazis are winning and everything's going to shit. But I think that misery porn is more a matter of personal perception.
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).

There is nothing redeeming anywhere in the entire series.  No character goes untarnished, no event is anything less than as miserable as possible, basically everything is deliberately made to be as horrible and miserable and evil as possible, and those are just the side we're supposed to be rooting for.

It is nothing more than cheap sadism.  The only thing that removes it from the level of drek like Hostel and Saw is the level of graphic representation.

You do know that aside from Roslyn, none of the strong female leads in the new BSG were even human. Just sayin'.

Frankly, why someone could like the original series is beyond me. It's one of the biggest crocks of shite ever aired on TV. First time I saw it I was like 6 or 7 and I thought it was retarded. Specially the robodog. God, how I hated that fucking dog.

She was a religious whore, for fuck's sake. It reached such peaks of retardation that it can make a wooden statue (for example, the guy playing Adama) cry blood.

Given that, as a small pika I too hated that fucking robodog I can only agree with this post...

...except to point out that at one point most whores were 'religious whores'. Its amazing what people will do to get you agree with their version of Bog.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

I didn't really think it was either, but apparently some folks do.

Damn few of the male leads, either, by the time we got to the end.

Anyone here ever read The Man Who Was Thursday by G.K. Chesterton?*  I stopped watching the new BSG an episode or two into the third season, but I had to wonder if that's the direction they were taking the story.

!i!

[*In The Man Who Was Thursday, the protagonist is recruited to infiltrate and expose cabal of the most heinous, dastardly anarchists in Europe, only to find that every member of the cabal is also a mole on the same mission.  Without the infiltrators, the conspiracy wouldn't exist.]

Quote from: ticopelp;321572Yeah, hopefully we can get a version which reduces all female characters to space secretaries, like they were in the original. The way God intended!

The original series had some good female roles.
The point is there's no reason that every tough male role has to be either turned into a female role (Starbuck, Cain) or reduced to an impotent wuss (Apollo, Adama).

More to the point: Is it written in stone that every remake should include characters of the same names?

Seriously: Is BSG, regardless of iteration, the 'Story of Adama, Apollo and Starbuck' or is it 'A handful of people on a leaky boat running from an apocalyptic doom of roboty death in the mormon future'?

I mean: They snatched that kid right the fuck out the series after, what?, a single episode.  Didn't hurt shit, and the lack of a robot dog is actually a selling point.

Boil down a show to its essential elements when doing a remake, please, rather than waste time tvetching about characters who are just going to be different based on the fact that the faaking ACTORS are different...

Quote from: RPGPundit;321837The original series had some good female roles.

If your idea of a "good female role" is someone who reads a computer screen and then tells a male character what was on it so the male character can actually go do something about it, I can only agree. Because that's basically what the female characters did, when they weren't being rescued or schtupped by Starbuck.

Don't get me wrong, there are things I like about the original BSG -- the art design, Dykstra's special effects, and the nostalgaic appeal -- but it was blatantly a kid's show and doesn't hold up too well in the 21st century.

I'm bewildered as to why we need another BSG "re-imagining" at all  -- the original story as told is too goofy and has little to offer modern audiences; I found the remake too dark and self-indulgent after the second season. Does this material really warrant another trip to the well? Isn't there some other thirty-year-old sci-fi property we could strip-mine and pervert?

Added to which, although I think something exciting can probably be done with BSG, I'm pretty sure Singer isn't the guy to do it. Superman Returns was a dull warming-over of the Richard Donner films. Singer's BSG will probably feature a maudlin Adama peeping in the girl's shower room and a dastardly Cylon real estate scam.

I'm honestly surprised there isn't one in production. Even more surprised that it doesn't star Ben Stiller as Steve Austin and Owen Wilson as Bigfoot.
