Title: Best "mountain man"/ frontier/ fur trade movies?
Post by: Trond on August 10, 2020, 05:53:19 PM
I'm talking about people who explored the American frontier, and made their living from fur trade, exploration, and trading with Indians like Jedediah Smith and Jim Bridger.

I have seen Jeremiah Johnson and the Revenant. Any others that you would recommend?

Theres a Netflix series with Jason Momoa. I haven't seen it. Dances with Wolves kinda goes that way. Not too much more I can offer on this as it's not really an area I dig into.

I haven't seen either. For some reason Dances with Wolves felt like it would appeal to me, but who knows, and I'll definitely check out the Momoa series.

Grizzly Adams and Daniel Boone come to mind right off as my grandparents watched both quite a bit. That and Little House on the Prarie.

Richard Harris seemed to like odd roles like this. Theres an obscure one called Western Man I believe from the 70s that I think was based on a real person. Been decades so not positive on that one.

Death Hunt with Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin is one I've seen a few times now and isnt bad really. Made in the 80s I believe. Also based on a real person apparently.

Theres one from the 50s featuring Clark Gable that have heard of but never seen. Also heard of Jerimiah Johnson but never actually seen it.

Probably more but those are the only ones can recall.

Greetings!

There is an old miniseries--Centennial--from I think 1979. Starring Robert Conrad, and many others. I always remember how Conrad's character was a French American explorer and fur trapper. It shows him dealing with animals, the weather, and different Indian tribes, as well as family and society back in the city of St. Louis.

Semper Fidelis,

SHARK

That does sound interesting. Maybe I'll check it out.

I just realized that nobody (that includes me) has so far mentioned the most obvious series/films: Davy Crockett :D

Does The Outlaw Josey Wales count?

There was also the 1970's TV series The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, starring Dan Haggerty. Apparently that was spun off of a 1974 movie of the same title, also starring Dan Haggerty. There were also some TV movies made after the TV series. EDIT: Oops, Omega beat me to it.

You could look for adaptations of James Fenimore Cooper's frontier stories, particularly the "Leatherstocking Tales." There have been several adaptations of The Last of the Mohicans, for instance.

There was also the Hawkeye TV series starring Lee Horsley and Lynda Carter, but that isn't all that good.

Are you interested in novels, or just movies?

I wouldn't mind some recommendations as far as novels go (I don't have time to finish that many, unless it's good though)

Davy Crockett is a farly good series too. A serial from Disney along with others like The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh and Swamp Fox to name a few.

Allan W. Eckert has written a series of books about frontiersmen in the time period. They are history that reads like fiction. The first in the series is The Frontiersmen (https://www.amazon.com/Frontiersmen-Narratives-America-Book/dp/0553257994), and it is an excellent read that should provide tons of inspiration.

There was a series called "Hawkeye" centered around the main character from Last of The Mohicans.  It was in the 90's and seemed a bit cheesy from what I remember, but....it had Linda Carter in it.
