I have made a decision NOT to do my typical avatar pics on this forum...after all I don't want to be responsible for someone going hysterical and having a heart attack just because I posted a picture.
Last couple of days I've had a pic of me that was taken while I was behind a GM screen running a game. At 11:30am today I leave for a local Sci-Fi convention called MILLENNICON. I have been using Vincent and Buckaroo as my avatars when I know I'm going to be away from the computer.
What does everyone else think about avatars?
Why do some of you use cartoon or comic ones ? and some don't.
What influences your decision to change an avatar pic that you've had for a long time?
With me - it was an honesty thing showing my face like that . Figured : "What the hell?" The site is about gaming and I was in the midst of a game in the picture. One of the other pics I used was taken at the game store I work at . (Oh and Pundit? I dress in normal clothes everyday for work. Dress shirts and normal dark denim jeans or dress pants is what is normal for me. The Klingon uniform shots at the store are from Halloween - EVERYONE was encouraged to dress up at our mall that night. )
What do you guys prefer the next 3 days if you have to look at my old posts? Buckaroo Banzai? Vincent Price? GM Ed C. behind the GM screen? Or something else?
- Ed C.
Lately, I've been using illos from my latest game as my avatar. My last one was a naval captain sitting behind his desk with the stern lights behind him for my Napoleonic Naval game. On tBP, I use a cartoon mouse with bat wings, and have for years.
Generally, I use other posters' avatars as icons - I associate the avatar with the poster, and get messed up when the poster changes frequently.

I have used my real face occasionally, a very good photo taken by my wife, but I decided I'm not massively comfortable, it feels like vanity.
I use Harry Kipling from 2000AD because he's British, kills gods and has a lovely south asian assistant 'gel'.
What more could a chap strive for?
Pip pip!
The hazards of avatars! I had no idea your avatar was a person, Grim! I took it to be a slavering monster with one blue eye, the other squinted shut, opening a malformed maw, with tentacles flailing about!
If I look at it again, my vision switches between the monster and the Brit, back and forth. This is like SteveD's infamous Fighter Pilot/platypus from RPGnet.
-clash
I try to stick with the same avatar just for recognition purposes. My experience has been that more folk look at the avatar (at least on a bigger site) than look at the name.
As it is, I really identify with the GO Play! movement because I sometimes wonder when I'm talking about an RPG with someone online if they've ever actually played that RPG. And, for me, it doesn't get cooler than incorporating it into a Superman shield. After Thomas T posted this one on RPG.net and I snapped it up.
I actually like pictures of people because I think it's neat to see the actual person, but otherwise I'm not picky. As long as it's nothing disgusting, Koltar, like goat.se then it's all about the same to me.
I chose this avatar, because it's almost me, but it's not exactly me. It reinforces how the internet is always a little unreal to me. I don't think I'll change it unless except for holiday kicks.
There was a thread about Dune and Sting was mentioned. RockViper posted this picture and I liked it so much I decided to use it as my Avatar. Thanks Viper :D
I also changed my sig, to something more rpg appropriate .
Edit: Koltar has your picture ever appeared in a magazine or something ? It looks so familiar.

David R
I don't have a photo of myself in The Tie.
I picked my avatar because I'm lazy.
I sort of defaulted into the avatar I used to have over on RPGnet. I kept intending to find a new one (for about 6+ years), but never got around to it. I only recently found out how easy it is to re-size them.
Recently I found the one I have now, and decided that I liked it, and that it actually looks a bit like me (if I'm totally backlit and no details are visible...:D).
So, I'll be sticking with it for awhile.
Tom
I use this avatar on gaming forums, because its a cool looking symbol and I GM a realms game.
Since I use my name, I use my face.
I've used the same one since 2003 on RPG.net, and I use this new one here and a few other places. It don't want to make it smaller for RPG.net.
I too this picture while I was getting ready for some high speed film work while I was consulting for some film students on campus. The bandana is to protect from the slim possiblity of flying debris (I was shooting molotov cocktails with an assault rifle). The pistol I had because we were in a secure location and I could shoot as much as I wanted. I figured it added to my BANDITO! effect, so I took the pic holding it, unloaded*, in frame.
It's not much my face right now, obviously...but that's me.
*Hence my finger on the trigger. I was also in a sand pit/bunker thing when I took it.
No one expects my avatar. ;)
Some years ago I took a picture of Homer Simpson (originally in a Gomez look from The Addams Family) and modded it to look like a Borg.
I use it on most forums but havent gotten around to enabling it here, for some reason it doesnt seem like a big deal anymore.
Deja Vu'
I coulda swore I already had this discussion...My avatar is me.
With the dukes up.
I'm using the cover pic of Cyberpunk 2020. With the added text of 'cyberpunk' above it. Simply because I am a fan of the game and the literary genre.
Also have used a picture of a stitched together face from a Polish promo card for the CCG Kult. Part of the promo poster for Enemy at the Gates. Lusipher from Poison Elves. Don't remember what I have up over on TBP.
Unlike a photo of me, the illustration is intentionally hilarious.

I'm using this one on a temporary basis until I find a cooler Megaman picture.
Not sure why I chose this Avatar. Just a random decision I guess.
Megamanfan, that's the worst pic of megaman I've ever seen. He looks like he's about to give oral sex to someone.
@Blue Devil- Who is that?

I picked the avatar I have cuz it matches well with my login name (both relatively obscure references from geeky shows). I got it GoPlay-ized by ThomasT over at RPGnet.

I didn't add my avatar because I didn't think I'd be staying long. It's kind of a hassle and there's rarely a rush.
But, I went and added it anyhow. It's pretty much how I plan on being seen for a while.

I say we combine threads and see what kind of bids we can get to let a game company buy our avatar space...
My current Avatar pic on here is one taken in the past few weeks . I'm wearing a normal black blazer or "sportcoat" and a long sleeve blue shirt. That stuff behind me ? its the shelves of the game store that I work at.
Over at the SJG forums my pic is currently "ocked" into a similiar pic from months ago where I am wearing a black dress shirt. Also on the "Big Purple & Pink" I am the same or similiar pic as this forum.
Weird - for the first time in years, i don't have myself dressed in my Klingon gear in any of my forum avatars. (any or most of those Klingon pics were taken during Halloween night at the game store OR at previous charity events at Sci-Fi conventions. )
I like Doc Rotwan'gs new TRAVELLER-inspired avatar. If I did that I might have chosen an area in District 268.

My forum name is Hastur T. Unspeakable, it's a Yellow Sign
Incidentally, a long time ago I used to DJ (only twice and very badly) under the name Hastur T. Unspeakable and when NKL did they're whole Damnation Army thing it seemed like a good character. When normal service resumed I changed to Hastur T. Fannon and it seems to have stuck. The funny thing is my middle initial is 'S' (I'm a Fannon of Scott)
PS: I *think* I get the joke in Dr. Rotwang!'s [1] latest avatar, but I don't speak Traveller USP designations. Can someone explain it to me?

My avatar is a fave character (Chirico Cuvie) from fave anime series (Armoured Trooper Votoms).
I drew me my own avatar.
I´m the Prussian Gamer.
The Prussian part should be obvious, actually the colour scheme of this fine officers coat is the scheme for the Infantrieregiment 1 Friedrich II.
The Gamer part:

No interpretation required. It's just a subsector map, rotated to a dashing angle and so that the trade route points down kind of like a necktie. The trade route was then colored pink, because it's me.

The first time I saw your avatar I thought to myself "Hey, is that George Washington about to throw a d20 across the Potomac?" But I'm dunderheaded that way.
Funny thing this past weekend : Because of a tempaban on another forum my avatar was locked in place on it . As a result I had a "human" face on all 3 major gaming forums that I'm on. Not a bumpy headed "Klingon" Ed C. on any of them.

Now that I have a recent picture for it... I have this avatar because it's me.
I didn't have an avatar because I'd never thought about having one. I just got one. It's me, back when I was playing around with cameras in my university days.
My current avatar is of ex-Canadian PM Jean Chretien throttling an uppity protestor.

Pseudo - thats kind of cool, actually. It sort makes me think of the expression "Off the top of my head" when I look at that. Which is what a lot of forum chat comments tend to be.

Man, you really
do dig Foucault! ;)
Pseudophedrine actually went up points in my opinion for that picture being his avatar. Bonus points for managing to look either like Billy Corgan or Hunter S.
I remember where I got mine, though. Off a sight called 'damaged' run by an amazing, if really depressing, artist named Locke. It's a slightly 'shopped picture that used to have the words 'Robot Love' on it. While cool, it made the picture more awkward then I wanted, so I rubbed them out. It was more effort then I thought it would have been... but it really suits me.
Thanks guys. :) It's one of my favourite pictures of myself (if that's doesn't sound too vain).
Big version here: http://seraph.rooms.cwal.net/pensive.jpg

Uh... originally I just had a pic of me up. It was a pretty ugly thing to begin with, as I don't generally take or keep pictures of myself. I found this one on a friend's blog and put it up just to see how it would work.
Comments were made, and I can't remember why, but it convinced me to ugly myself up a bit. I've got another like this, only it's all in red and black and yellow... haven't put it up yet, though.

No. I hate them. In particular I hate snowflakes when they are falling on April 11th when I should be practicing baseball with my kids and their team. God Damn Global Warming.
For a brief time when I started here, I had the name Feanor. According to Tolkien's own notes, Feanor's symbol is the one you see there.
I'd put up my picture, but that would just frighten children and trigger the gag reflex in most adults. I'd put up a picture of my wife, but then you'd all be trying to find out where I live.
So for now it remains Feanor's symbol.
...yeah...I stuck a new pic in there. Just a sportcoat or nice jacket that I think looks alright on me.
