This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Humans are the Heroes, and intelligent thinking saves the day movies...

Quote from: Koltar;353942Even with the emphasis on Action!, we saw the characters thinking their way out of situations.
B'uh...wha?!?  Where in that movie did anyone "think" his or her way out of situations?  What we saw was a lengthy string of deus ex machina to extricate characters from their fates.

Bah.

If BABYLON 5 had been a movie its general attitude about humans and human culture would make it qualify. It generally had the viewpoint that despite many faults, humankind had the capacity and potential for great goodness and kindness.
Interesting was the repeated theme of humans being unique in their efforts to constantly make communities when others wouldn't have that inclination.

Yes and no.

Jong appears to be assuming that this thread was started as a response to some things said in the AVATAR threads.

Its not an ongoing discussion, tho it is a new question or discussion in response to some patterns and trends that might be there in modern entertainment of the past 30 years or so.
These trends seem to pop up more in recent movies or Sci Fi movies where the scripts are weak and the visuals are strong.

I'd say it's more Pundy Jr. trying hard to take after Pundy Sr.

NO.

Starship Troopers was done as a comedy/satire of War propaganda films.

If you don't believe me - find a copy of the DVD and play the commentary or the Behind The Scenes stuff.  The Director still had a pretty good memory of both Nazis and Communists in Europe from when he was kid.  He was quite surprised that the film critics didn't get the satiric point of view and style.

I must confess I am amazed!

I know movie critics are not usually known for their keen intellect or deep insights; but still...

That movie "Would You Like To Know More?!" reels all but screamed: Space Fascists and Proud of It!

Some didn't get it.

What was even funnier were the critics who were mad at the stuff that was lifted directly from Heinlein, political comments and such.

I personally am more amazed that Ed actually watched the Behind the Scenes clips. Or maybe not

EDIT: On topic, Sunshine, despite its flaws, I love it.
