This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Are you a Gamer?

Since apparently some people bandy the word GAMER about as if were meant to represent some sort of landed gentry visiting their opinions on the peons I thought I'd ask this. What makes a gamer?

Is it a post count? Is it actual game play? Is it playing a certain number of games? How many game systems do you have to play to qualify? How much money do you have to spend?

I'm confused because I thought gamers were people who had fun playing games. Apparently I am wrong.

I don't play this game.
The past lives on in your front room
The poor still weak the rich still rule
History lives in the books at home
The books at home

You in fact play it very well. Better than most.

You're not wrong.  You're spot on.  Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.

Everyone at my job knows I'm a gamer.
"The difference between being fascinated with RPGs and being fascinated with the RPG industry is akin to the difference between being fascinated with sex and being fascinated with masturbation. Not that there\'s anything wrong with jerking off, but don\'t fool yourself into thinking you\'re getting laid." —Aos

Some people at my job do, but to be honest I don't discuss my personal life much at work. Add in that most of them are not, and the environment we work, and well it's better to keep your mouth shut about anything that doesn't fit in.

I do have a soft spot though for convicts who roleplay, and generally I don't confiscate spinners when I find them-unless they're obviously dangerous contraband. We have two active groups of convicts who game, but Policy and Procedure makes their efforts difficult as most gaming materials are classified as Dangerous Contraband, which I find humorous to no end.

I play games a lot. Video games, card games, role-playing games.

I'm a gamer. It's good times.

I've been told I'm supposed to remain socially awkward, which is easy with all these girls hanging off my arms!
God in the Machine.

Here's my website. It's defunct, but there's gaming stuff on it. Much of it's missing. Sorry.

I've got a blog. Do you read other people's blogs? I dunno. You can say hi if you want, though, I don't mind company. It's not all gaming, though; you run the risk of running into my RL shit.

I work at a game store , and I have a regular RPG campaign that I am the GM of.
Kind of hard to 'hide" being a gamer then.

Please explain how you're wrong, because the definition you just gave works for me.
"Meh."

So let me get this straight:  You feel like people have sought out opportunities to insult you because you're not "gamer" enough for them.  So you, in turn, are going to seek out opportunities to insult them because they sought out opportunities to insult you?

Well, I suppose you're just playing your part in the thriving life-cycle of internet grudges, but it all seems sort of pointless to me.  Why not try saying "I'm a GAMER, and screw anyone who says differently!" and see where it gets you?  You might well find that there aren't as many people who want to argue the point as you imagined.

I'm not a number, I'm a free man!

German doesn't have a proper equivalent, as the term derived straight from "game" would denote a gambler instead. So I'll neatly escape that drawer.

Sure, why not?  I is what I is.  Plus, it's shorter than "role-playing game hobby enthusiast".

What, the fact that I post on a relatively obscure forum devoted to roleplaying games wasn't confirmation enough? Yeah, I'm a gamer, and while I don't advertise it at work or social situations, I would never deny it - I just doubt non-gamers would be interested.

Anyone who enjoys any aspect of gaming, for whatever reason is a gamer.

You like to read RPG books? Gamer
You like to play RPGs? Gamer
Play/collect CCGs? Gamer
Play/Collect minis? Gamer
Play PC games? Gamer
Play/collect Board games? Gamer

It's that simple and if anyone says otherwise, they are swine. :haw:

I thought I was, but after a few months here I'm not sure if my sporadic & oft cancelled 4-6 weekly Gurps game qualifies me anymore.
