My Samsung galaxy 7" is perfect.

I chose to get it over an iPad becuase i can carry it in ajacket pocket on a plane or whatever and so that single feature swung it for me. The ability to stick in a 64Micro SD card with a few dozen movies and all episodes of GoT is a boon too.

It really depends on what you need it for - I need the 9.7" iPad screen because I use it for studying, reading, and at work (It's now replaced my netbook as my portable computer), so I didn't get much of a choice in the matter. The 7"'s are amazing media players, though - it's a great device size.

I do wish it had a memory card slot, though.

well my 7" is a reader, media device, browser and games player.
when I want to type I want a keyboard and I find he size of the iPad just in betweeny.
If I want to do what i am doing now, on a conference call readng a spreadsheet and surfng and posting comments then I use a laptop, if i want to read a book I have a galaxy which is real easy to carry, there isn't really a sweet spot for me where a big tablet fills a niche.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to make out that you made a bad choice; you made a different choice than me, because we both have different requirements for our devices. For me, that 7" screen would be too small, but 9.7" is fine because I always have a bag with me anyway.

The tablet market right now is fantastic, with a variety of devices for every requirement.

One my hobbies is puttering around with my computers and my day job is writing software for metal cutting machine. So I always been tech savvy. When I saw the first touch tablets I wanted on and played with the iPad and other devices at the store enough to show that they would be useful.

But when I actually got one, an iPad 2, I was surprised at how much it took over my computing time. Most of my browsing, watching tv/movies, and about half of my games are played on the iPad.  

And it is great to have at the game table as well. Especially as reference and for it ability to show images without having to print them.

It doesn't replace everything because quickly became an "important" device. I think it would even be the main writing machine if I got a full size bluetooth keyboard to use with it. Instead of being the goto device for all things internet and computers, my PC now just being used for specific things and specific games.

As for my kids, OMG, the TV is now only used to play the Wii and DvD if that at all. Most of the time they are on the two tablets we have (Nexus 7 and iPad 2) watching youtube, Netflix, etc. Curled in their favorite chairs, bed, or couch.

Ironically the only problem I have with my tablet is that I got only one of the things. Sometimes I need multiple have multiple pieces of information at my finger tips. So it still a mix of tablet and paper for me. But it definitely better with having the tablet. The biggest feature is the search function in Goodreader for PDFs.

I have an iPad 2 and a Nexus 7 as well. While the iPad 2 definitely is the Cadillac of the two. The Nexus 7 holds its own.

To me it like the difference between Windows 3.X and the Mac in the early 90s. The Mac was the superior GUI and way more polished. But by version 3.11 Windows was just as usable and way more affordable. Apple now is in the same boat in regards with iOS vs Android.

The are several streaming hard drive options and at least one usb external, just google ipad external drive. There is one out there for like 50$ i think, which is pretty fucking cheap for any kind of tablet accessory.



As for me, the paltry memory on the basic rig is just about enough. I don't have any interest in owning movies, i'd much rather rent, because if the movie is awesome and i buy it, given a year, i'll over watch it and never want to see it again, and if it sucks, now I've got a shit movie on my HD. Either way i end up with dead space on the hard drive. As for full seasons of TV episodes, I lack the level of commitment that modern episodic TV requires. I never made it past season one of Breaking Bad. Right now i use if for gaming books and comics (tablet+marvel digital comics unlimited= 100's of hours of cheap entertainment). When the field season starts up i may get an external drive for movies as I can rent them a month in advance and will not be at the mercy of shitty hotel wifi.

BTW, to whom it may concern, I'm not the least bit interested in playing dueling tablets. The thrust of my previous post was "get a tablet" I mentioned the ipad because it's what I have and it is awesome.  I will say that the webcam/mic capabilities of the android tablets seems to vary quite a bit, so check those features before you buy if you plan on using that shit.  One of our players has a tablet which, in the interest of forestalling the afore mentioned dueling tablets conversation, shall go unnamed and he had to ho and buy a new webcam head set rig becase he looked green and his audio was 100% shit.

Someone gave me a Nook tablet for Christmas. So far I've mainly used it for web surfing and reading and it's great. I also Netflixed a movie and the picture quality was surprisingly good. You definitely need headphones though, as the speaker is pathetic. The long battery life means it kicks a laptop's ass for killing time on plane flights.

I like the 7' tablet format. It really hits the "small enough to carry around but big enough to read comfortably" sweet spot.

I said before to my friends when the iPod came out with the touch wheel (as in the very beginning) that they are gunning for the 'desk' computer of Ender's Game. There's no other reason to simplify buttons into touch as an interface unless you're testing out touch technology (which was around and old by the late 1980s. it was just glitchy.). When the iPod Touch came out I knew exactly that it was a test release for a more complex version (iPhone), before the larger coup-de-grace version (iPad).

Had a similar prediction about the Gameboy 3DS. Remember SEGA's Time Traveller arcade game? Remember the East Asian cell phone "compact mirror function"? Now look at the Gameboy DS with two screens... I knew where Nintendo was going, wasn't hard to figure out. Now Nintendo funking around with the DS (touch screen) and 3DS (3-D "hologram tech," also as old as the 1980s/90s) and the future of Star Wars and the like is here. Now go back and look at your Wii controller and the new Wii U tablet... Now look at Apple again.

These functions should be integrating in around 5-10 years for IR motion-controlled interactive holograms on your tablet. The power glove might make a comeback in such a situation.

Now go to East Asia and look at SEGA's collectible card based Real Time Strategy arcade game Romance of the 3 Kingdoms (or Horse Racing games, or Soccer games). Now go back... and ask yourself why most RPG publishers/freelancers aren't making lots and lots of phone calls & networking to video game publishers, along with game idea sketches, just to get some hands on work time on these things.

The integration isn't over by a long shot. There's money to be made out there! Get to work!

I will admit that I have VERY low tolerance for lag, inaccurate touch targets, unresponsive UI, etc...

The iPad is mostly awesome in all those regards while the Nexus 7 is pretty terrible.

Add to that better and more abumdent apps and I see almost no reason to recommend the Nexus 7 over an iPad.

Ok, I do think this thread has basically veered off of RPG discussion. Unless there's something to add that brings it back toward that subject, the current discussion might be more appropriate if I move this thread to "Media and inspiration".

I got me a 10" Samsung Galaxy a couple of months ago and it works perfectly for me. At the game table I primarily use it to pass pictures and handouts around the table without having to print them or occasionally play an mp3 or video. If you have a pdf of the game you're running it's also pretty handy for looking up stuff.

I don't really see the use of digital dice rollers.

Not having to carry around dice, especially if you like "bucket o' dice" systems (d6, HERO, etc).

EDIT: and, well, I have a friend who SWEARS by these systems, but is probably the slowest counter I've ever met.
As in, I can look at his dice from 10 feet away, and get the result quicker than he can.
The "auto-calculate result" is a ****ing Blessing, with him.

I like the iPad2 I got as a gift a lot more then I thought I would, it's becoming a Borg device.

However, I'll have to say there are some definite downsides.

• Integration with Microsoft stuff is terrible.  Exchange email ok.  OneNote sucks royal ass.  Skydrive is ok, but file types are a problem, because there's no Office compatible product worth a goddamn.
• Proprietary nature of this is starting to piss me off.  No .avi support, seriously? No. SERIOUSLY!?  Oh, I can get a remote control app for my computer that can run the .avi's.  Oh wow thanks.
• No way to browse the fucking thing like a directory.  Every app keeps it's own data.  Nice, wish I could go through and make sure there's no erasable data anywhere since the thing is absolutely UN-UPGRADEABLE.
• The App Store is monetized to a greater degree and more brazenly then a Tijuana whorehouse.  That Free game isn't a demo, oh no, it's an experiment in marketing psychology.  It's going to blast you with ads until you pay it to shut up and/or ask you compete with your friends for high score, then let you buy extras to cheat.  99% of all games are like this.  The culture between Android App Store and Apple Store is like the difference between PBS and the Jersey Shore.  I close the damn thing and want to take a shower.

All that having been said, I may never read a real paper novel again.

If I can stand to cough up the dough, I think the SurfacePro is going to curbstomp the iPad and prison rape the corpse if you want to use a tablet for anything remotely businesslike.

I love GoodReader and FileBrowser though, top notch apps.
