This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: PseudoephedrineMorrow, unless you're going to say that two gay guys marrying one another harms someone, your argument is irrelevant. "It depends on what harm means" - certainly, and "harm", while perhaps unclear in many cases, is not in this one. No one is harmed in any conventional sense of the word as it is used in English by native speakers of moderate intelligence.

People certainly do make a variety of different harm arguments in opposition to men marrying each other.  I don't want to get into the position of defending an argument that I don't agree with so I'll simply say that you should do some Google searches and you should be able to find, for example, the High Court of Ireland making such an argument.

More importantly, every "morality law" is based on the concept of harm - implicitly if not explicitly.

The idea is, tolerating "immoral" behavior is harmful to the moral fabric of society which destroys families and mentally harms children, etc.

Both the Left and the Right use the "harm of immorality" argument for countless laws - whether it's the defense of marraige act, a bill to ban violent video games in Massachuttses, or some moron in Georgia trying to outlaw baggy pants.

Personally, I think its all a load of crap (from both sides), but they are arguing harm.

I don't deny people make such arguments. I just think they're prima facie garbage arguments.
