This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Accents, Which actors do them really well? Do a good job at it?

Because of stuff said up in the Roleplaying thread related to DOCTOR WHO and TORCHWOOD I'm starting this thread.

Not interested in the negatives, just the good ones.

Christian Bale - Does a pretty decent American accent, so much so that he stayed with that character voice when doing interviews for BATMAN BEGINS.

Drew said that James Marsters did a pretty good job in that  TORCHWOOD episode.  (by the way, heard that character is supposed to return)

Supposedly Hugh Laurie does a good job of an American accent on "HOUSE" - I wouldn't know, I'm usually watching something else.

In V FOR VENDETTA, Natalie Portman sounded natural. Did those in the U.K. think she sounded natural?

I guess Meryl Streep is the obvious answer; it's become almost a cliche.

I think Hugh Jackman and James Cromwell both do very good American Accents. Russel Crowe is convincing, too.
The only thing I ever believed in the Bible was John 11:35.

James J Skach

The guy that plays Jimmy Macnulty in The Wire - Dominic West. Born in Yorkshire, England, he has a heavy, to us on this side of the pond, accent when out of character.  On The Wire, he's pretty good as a Baltimore detective.

Though my wife says she can here more of his natural tendency this year than in years past...

If you mean this James Cromwell.......(?)

It might be because he was born in America.

Ah, his George W. Bush impression.

I've never heard anyone do a decent Australian accent, including Meryl Streep.

Re: Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta...

You know your movie review site is a wee bit biased when they start throughly lambasting an actresses 'atrocious' accent in a movie (despite not having a native ear for said accent) and no one else... anywhere... complained.

Did I say Lambasted? I meant excoriated.

Luckily I don't read them because I care about the accuracy of their perspective, but for the vigor of their hate.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

I haven't even heard Australians do a good Australian accent.  You people are completely unbelievable.

Hugh Laurie is about 99.9% indistinguishable from a regular American accent. You have to listening for it, and even then, its very rare.

I haven't heard him slip, its true, but I will note that his accent is, to my ear anyway, odd for its lack of recognizable regional inflection. It's American, but blandly generic American that damn few people actually speak.

Not that I would have noticed if I hadn't paid such close attention to his talking. I think the 'I've got a frog in my throat' burr helps him too....

It is.  It's the kind we speak in the Midwest when we're trying to sound all non-regional (though, for the most part, the midwest has a pretty standard American sound to it, with perhaps a bit of a twang, depending on the area, and exlcuding Chicago and the North Mid-west). :p

Don't gimmee none o' your lip. I'm from Nebraska, and you don't get more midwestern than that.  ;)

Mind you, I haven't LIVED there for 15 years or so... so I could be out of touch....
