This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

And yet I did.  I hang my head with shame.

Wierd, too.  Just last Friday I was explaining how Waterworld was more than a bit of a ripoff of Road Warrior (chee-hee -- I accidentally typed "Toad Warrior").  This leads to Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, too, I suppose, though I'm oddly loathe to group the original Mad Max into the bunch.

The frightening thing is that the science fiction magazine articles at the time said that the military was very interested in their vehicles.  So what do US Special Forces use in the desert these days?  Dune buggies with machine guns.

Dude, hello.  Cobra ring a bell?  Can't forget that one (but his destruction of that Merc in the movie was a friggin' sin).

And, don't you ever, ever forget the whole Ninja movement of the 80s; the names of the movies which highlighted this single most important importation of Asian culture into Western badassery are too many to mention (Gymkata perhaps?  How about The Master TV series).

Let's not go into the whole sub genre of sword-n-sorcery flicks, but hands down, the best (worst?) one to highlight this area is The Sword and the Sorcerer.  Classic!
I start from his boots and work my way up. It takes a good half a roll to encompass his jolly round belly alone. Soon, Father Christmas is completely wrapped in clingfilm. It is not quite so good as wrapping Roy but it is enjoyable nonetheless and is certainly a feather in my cap.

what about dirt bikes with machine guns & missiles, tho?  nothing screams BADASS to a foreign force than that!  :drillsergeant:

What did HBO stand for in the early 1980s?  "Hey, Beastmaster's On!"

I heard that for the first time last year, and I don't know if it's my age (41) or what, but it brings me to tears every fucking time. I'm chuckling away as I type this, in fact. As they say, it's funny, because it's true.

Ah!  Hahahahahahaha!  Spot-fucking-on!

Still, I wish I had a hot princess and smart ferrets like he had!  Sigh...

Chee-hee!

Hey, wasn't Kari Wuhrer in the sequel?  You know, pre-boob job.

Does Big Trouble in Little China count?

I tried watching Remo Williams recently (I hadn't seen it in the 80s) and the... Star Trek: Voyager flashbacks... I just couldn't watch it.

How about They Live!?
(OK, so I'm on a John Carpenter kick.)

Years ago, there was an article by the author of the short story that movie was based on in Writer's Digest called "The Science Fiction Attitude" where he talks about how he purposely wrote the protagonist to have no name and no background to show that a science fiction story doesn't really need complex characterization to work.
