QuoteIn light of the recent surplus of blockbusting superhero films all but guaranteeing monstrous studio revenue, Hollywood has hit the ground running and greenlit every script featuring a violent man in his underwear from Captain Marvel to your drunken father on Thanksgiving.

Yet, for every Batman Begins that graces the theaters, there are 10 useless men in spandex lined up for the next few years. Here are five of the next big-budget superhero films currently in production that simply should not be.

Chee-hee!  This  bit got an involuntary snort out of me:
QuoteWhy Fanboys Are Excited:
The Rock is attached to play the villain, a likable enough actor who was seems genetically designed specifically to be in comic book movies. It's not a bad role, either. If you take away almost everything ridiculous that doesn't work about Captain Marvel, you have his antithesis and mortal enemy, Black Adam. Not to worry, though, sensitive readers, Black Adam is not a racist caricature of a black man that embodies everything evil. The "Black" only refers to his dark soul and corrupted nature. He's actually an Arab.
!i!

(P.S. Just for the sake of controversy, I was disappointed that Watchmen wasn't on their list.)

That article is pretty funny, but I'm psyched for Luke Cage.  Singleton knows how to put chaos into his movies and gets good, interesting performances from his actors (Chiwetel Ejiofor in 4 brothers and Jeffrey Wright in Shaft).  He is kind of like a contemporary grindhouse director with decent-sized budgets.  His movies are never total successes, but they can get quite entertaining.  He's the perfect director to do Luke Cage.

Great read, had fun. Tired now. Comment more later!

I dunno comrade, I think if it were Terry Gilliam he would make a kickass Green Lantern and would despite studio interference make this :

Quote...expect the new Green Lantern film to imagine up some slightly-larger-than-usual vanilla lattes and tickets to the Plain White T's concert in order to impress his high school sweetheart, Dakota, after which he will most likely imagine an awkward handjob in the back of a Toyota Celica.

part of the film.

I never had much love for the Green Lantern, but I think that the formula for these movies have changed in recent years-evolved.  I think any of these could be done right, but like all comic books movies they carry great potential for failure (Even greater, in my opinion, than a regular action or comedy movie.)

Isn't there also an Ant-Man film slated? By the guy who worked with Simon Pegg on Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Not Nick Frost, the other one - can't remember his name. Argh..

Edit: Edgar Wright!

My favorite part!!!
QuoteThough we will readily admit he was a serious hard-ass (the man patrolled Harlem dressed like your grandma on vacation) we would like for you to notice his "metal headband," which upon close inspection is actually a little girl's costume Tiara worn upside down.

This, combined with the canary-yellow blouse and navy blue stretch pants, leads us to believe that while the streets may be safer thanks to Cage, somewhere in Brooklyn there is a sad, pre-teen girl who is trying to find her Halloween costume.

Meh.  Most superheroes can be mocked for wearing girly spandex.  Mocking Namor for his ankle-wings, Cage for his tight pants, etc. is just silly.

Also, I don't think the biggest comic franchises make for the best movies, as I posted on in an LJ post on "Films adapted from comics".  My favorite comic book adaptation films were:

1) X2
2) Mystery Men
3) American Splendor
4) Men in Black
5) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
6) The Crow
7) Superman II
8) V for Vendetta
9) Spiderman
10) Ghost World

I haven't seen A History of Violence or Road to Perdition yet, though they are highly regarded.

Ghost World is the movie with Thora Birch and Scarlett Johanssen, right? It seems kind of in the vein of one of those "Nicotine Girls" movies, and I'd have never pegged it for comic book stuff.

It was originally a comic book by Daniel Clowes. I believe it ran in Eightball and then got collected in its own graphic novel.

I thought A History of Violence and the Sword of Vengeance series based on Lone Wolf & Cub were pretty good.

Yeah, I've heard good things but I haven't seen them yet.  I've added them to my Netflix queue now.

Yes, that's it.  I haven't read the original comic, but it seemed to have something of a comic book spirit to me.  American Splendor stood out to me much more as a great non-superhero comic book movie.  It's adapted from the autobiographical comic series by Harvey Pekar.  Ghost World was a good movie, but I did list it last.

Actually, the only comic that I've read that was adapted into a movie was V for Vendetta -- though I have read Watchmen and Whiteout, which have movie adaptations in production.  I only strictly followed three series: Sandman, Strangers in Paradise, and Astro City.  But I've read a number of others, like Amy Unbounded, Whiteout, Runaways, Birds of Prey, and some recent Hulk (Planet Hulk and WWH) and She-Hulk series.

Both are good though I've only seen the first LW&C: Sword of Vengeance.

Those Lone Wolf & Cub movies kick so much ass.  They just get more and more cool and insane as you move along in the series.
