What do I say if I come from "all over"?

I mean, I have six forums I visit daily, one of which I moderate on.

Was 1 or more of the six rpg.net, ENWorld, or Nutkinland?  If yes, go with the one you go to the most.  If not, other.

I learnt of this site through the blogosphere. In all my time when I was on RPG.net (and my time reading it long after I've gone from it), and ENworld, I had not once heard of you guys.
You really should do more poaching and cross-advertising. I bet a lot of readers/posters there who are frustrated with the way of things would find the lighter and freer atmosphere here to be really their thing, if only they knew you exist.

Actually, the powers at some earlier incarnations of Nutkinland took steps to mildly limit membership.  It was intended to be more of a place that a special few find and, if they are dedicated, they follow the frequent server changes.

Whether this attitude still applies is up to the current owners.

I've been here before, but to the newest incarnation I came via EnWorld, not really planning on staying, but taking a seat nonetheless. Now I'm planning on becoming the couch woman.

at one point, some of our more enterprising members went and pimped our site on ENWorld.

2 of the 3 got permabanned for it, and the only reason that the 3rd didn't is still rather debateable.

Nothingland/Nutkinland!

All hail the army of Damnation!  The sun has set!  Or something...

Excuse me, I'm going back to lurking...

Post Scriptum: Good job on the site Pooka. :win: Though I'm an Opera user, and it doesn't like that...

I've been a member of Nutkinland/Nothingland for several years now.  I joined in early 2003, IIRC.  I think I headed over during one of the innumerable times ENWorld was down and Nutkinland was the officially-ordained backup site.  (Ah... the good ol' days...)  I liked its style a lot better after just a little bit of perusal.  Eventually, after work blocked ENW for a bit and I vented about a messy breakup, I became a regular.

Its shutdown still makes me sad. :(  However, I have to say - Pooka and the Nutkins have a great thing going here (and Bullitt over on SO) and I think they will continue to thrive and grow.

Yes, both Schizm and Knightcrawler were permabanned from ENWorld. I think Russ relented when it came to Whisperfoot for a couple of reasons - the least of which is that he wasn't involved in the politeness-trolling.

The board I'm most active at is EN World and that will most likely stay that way.

But I actually found my way here over the Ratbastard DM Club's site.

I'll stay because this is seriously the most entertaining side I've found in a long time. And beside the "special" perspective there's still some quite interesting discussion here.

If I "come from" any of the listed options, and yet only one of the listed options, then I have to say EN World. I've been there since pre-3e, and was not active on RPG messageboards before then.

I have been around on most of the previous incarnations of Nutkin/Nothingland, but I don't claim to be one of the "in" crowd.

I was a regular poster on RPGnet who was becoming dissatisfied.  When I was given an arbitrary warning and Cessna refused to even tell me what I was being warned for when I appealed the call, I decided that was enough of a sign that I wasn't wanted there.

I discovered Nutkinland by way of RPGPundit's blog.  While it was Nutkinland, I made a couple of intermittent posts and tried to get into the feel of the place.  I was in the middle of this process when the ownership changed and it became TheRPGsite.

Ironically I found this place through Cessna linking to it in one of the big TT banning debates (probably JimBob's).  I've been reading around here for the past week and have decided that it's not quite the comfort-zone-fucking madhouse that rumour held it to be ;) .

I came from RPG.net.

Haven't had any problems there personally (no warnings, no admonitions, no bans) but I felt there were significant moves by other posters, voluntary and involuntary.

I'm also very unsatisfied by one moderator in particular, even if he hasn't taken any action against me.

Finally, I feel the Big Purple didn't cover the whole spectrum of games anymore. Ironically, soon after registering here, I discovered this website also has different but equally annoying biases toward certain games.

I'm basically fucked :p

Well, from our (admitedly few and far between) conversations at Big Purple, I seem to recall that we shared many of the same tastes in games. . . so. . . what games do you want to talk about?

Yeah, James! We do. And even when we don't, I really enjoy reading your thoughts. Right now, my personnal gaming thoughts go toward finding the right setup for my superhero campaign.

My general gaming urge is to talk about anything new in games, no matter where such games come from. And see if I will like them or can use them in some way.

I don't know what it means for others but for *me*, it means RPG.net has lost its magic and its primary mission.

I started off Elsewhere.  I then went to EN World.  From there I found Nutkinland (the EZBoard version - with the Black Lodge and everything!).  I signed up at RPGnet at some time during that, as well as the WOTC boards.  But I've got to say the previous incarnation as it's that which brought me here.

Via RPG.net, where I still post and feel is my RPG home on the web.  Never had any problems.

Came here, because one can never have enough places to talk RPGs.  Post VERY infrequently on ENworld, though I read lots on there, and ask for D&D specific help, as they have some real knowledgeable posters there abotu D&D.  Usually I'll discuss on both the .net and ENW, and see where the best advice lies.

Glad to recognize many who I've know at the .net and miss (or, still talk to, in the case of the TurtleLevi - though our tastes of gaming don't seem to lie in the same direction).

I was directed here from RPGNet about the time JimBobOz got banned for deliberately and persistently not breaking the rules.

RPGNet's moderators regularly claim their site has 34 times more users than the population of the known universe, which is one reason I've started posting more over here than there. Posting at RPGNet is like shouting in the middle of a riot - everyone else is doing it and unless you say something particularly interesting, or have a number of friends who'll post response and keep the thread in view, your posts get lost in the crowd. Especially as the search function is turned off and the replacement is hopeless.

I don't think it has anything to do with being interesting at all. It's more about reaffirming what people are already saying. Barring that, the only way to get a reaction over there is probably to be offensive or to troll.

A lot of people who praise games over there don't actually play them. Some haven't even read the games they are praising.

Patently ridiculous.  I'm far from a "popular" or "clique" poster, yet I carry on conversations with people all the time.

I don't play Exalted (though I recently got a copy in a online sale, as I had Amazon bucks, couldn't think of anything else I desperately wanted, and figured "May as well see what all the fuss is about"), and I loathe most indy rules-lite games.  Yet I never lack topics to discuss in RP Open.

If you want to have discussions and interactions with people you can.  If you want to be a jackass, you can get banned.  I've never felt "excluded" or ridiculed because I like Hunter and D&D, two of the most flameworthy topics (and there is a LARGE proportion of Rules Cyclopedia fans there - I think everyone who likes that era of D&D must all be contained there...).

And I've never held back on opinions and arguements.  I just am able to argue without breaking the "don't be a dick" rule.

Bravo. But you're just one person and for the many people who feel like you, there are just as many who don't.

When it gets to the point where people feel the need to pretend they like games they have never read just to get with the in-crowd, there is definitly a problem.

Quote from: Consonant DudeI came from RPG.net.

Well, one of the differences is that here no one will exert their authority to try to bully people into accepting certain positions about certain games.  So there are biases, but no one will punish you for having the opposite bias.

You can also start any thread you like, you know, and I hope you will do so. Often. We need new threads.

Yes, not to mention that said claims are largely an illusion. They're definitely big, alright, but they hide just what percentage of their "registered" posters are actually active posters.  I mean, if you registered there and made one post 4 years ago and then never went back, you're counted among the "thirty-five thousand people who post" at RPG.net.

35k my ass.

Oh obviously, in fact I was about to mention that last time one of them came out with their "35 million people on this site why should we take any notice of your opinion?" posts, but they locked the thread before anything could be said.
Not that it would have made any difference, because with 35 billion users, why should they take notice of one poster questioning the accuracy of their 35 trillion users claim? ;)

You can't help how people "feel".  People "feel" all kinds of things that aren't representitive of the reality.

I've never had any problems discussing or finding good discussion on, D&D or any of my other favorite games.

The biggest problem I have isn't with D&D haters, its with Rules Cyclopedia grognards who are constantly trumpeting the superiority of RC over 3.X, and any discussion of the latter, they try to swing to the former.

Point out one instance of RPG.net admin bullying posters into to accept certain postions about games.  Or punishing someone for having an opposite bias than the admin/mods.

You and a few others keep claiming this, but according to popular internet myth and legend, since I'm a massive D&D/3.5/Hunter fan, I should be the one getting bullied the most.  Yet I don't.

Maybe it has more to do with "posting like a jackass" than what game you happen to like.

Indeed. That's why I'm not as comfortable on RPG.net as I used to. Too many people talking out of their ass due to pressure of the surroundings. I still go on RPG.net but for the time being, I've cut back on participation and prefer it here.

That doesn't mean there aren't some kickass individuals who like all sorts of games over there. But they're drowned under a pile of groupthink bullshit I'm growing weary of. Now, if you disagree that this phenomenon exists on RPG.net, or if you think it's not as bad as I think it is or heck, if you think it's bad but still worthwhile for you, that's great!

Me, I'm not comfortable on a wesbite where people pretend that a game they have never read is @wesomez!1!.

If you're going to let the actions of other people dictate your life to you, man, I don't know.

I enjoyed your posts on the .net.  I mean, do what you will, if it bothers you that much, I guess you've got better things to do.

But people making themselves look like idiots?  I guess thats ONE reason to give up posting at a place.

Don't worry, man. It's not really about letting others dictate my life. These forums are communities. I'm there because of the people. Sometimes, you get to a point where you don't feel as comfortable.

I didn't leave RPG.net with a tantrum. My account is active, I'll keep on browsing and may even post occasionally (I've done so once already, because it was directly related to me). Right now, I'm giving this website a chance because it looks a bit more ecclectic to me.

I've loved RPG.net, especially a few years ago. And you can't beat the sheer number. Right now I'm just not comfortable and I don't feel my input is valuable over there. There are still some kickass individuals over there but many of them post here anyway :)

All forums have a life span. They just do. The key, to me, is to enjoy them while they're on the upswing.

My answer is no place. I have been an unregistered lurker of some of the sites listed above but nothing compelled me to start an account(until you magnificent bastards). I have been a forum regular on other non rpg sites.

But the cross forum politics intrigues me now. How do you stereotype the more popular rpg forums for a complete outsider? Be as biased or fair as you want. Hell make it funny if you can.

Yeah.

I post here because this place is a lot like RPGNet was about two or three years ago, before the mods got into their heads to promote harmony and inclusion above all instead of interesting discussion, and before site policy was increasingly being dictated by the needs of the Tangency attention whore community.

My interests being in traditional games, and esp. old school D&D, I also feel alienated by the heavy Forge spillover, even though I don't share Pundit's hatred for it. As many of these types don't game, they have a lot of time to post, and have made Open a lot less interesting than it used to be - especially since vigorous discussion (a.k.a. flamewars ;) ) is discouraged.

Meh. I still go there and participate in the odd thread, but it has indeed lost the magic. More power to those who like it, I guess.

RC is in no way superiour. It´s the foundation upon which 3.5 is built: solid, honest, high craftsmanship.

But the actual skyscraper, that´s 3.5.
